OSU Assistant Coaches

Seven top 25 teams have head coaches that were once assistant coaches at OSU, four in the top 7.

Jim Tressel
Nick Saban
Walt Harris
Larry Cooker
Pete Carroll
Glen Mason
Ron Zook

Many people feel that Dantonio could get a head coaching position if he would choose to leave Ohio State. With his defense scheme and game adjustment he could get a Mid-major or better team into the top 25.

Ohio State is a breeding ground for head coaches. If you go back through the history of college football it seems like a lot of the great ones (Bo Schem, Lou Holtz ect.) have been a part of the OSU coaching staff at one point or another. Dantonio may end up becoming a top notch head coach at some point down the road, although I have read that he has stated that he wants to chill at OSU for a while.

Dantonio never worries me when it comes to good game plans.

I don't think D'Antonio is going to leave any time soon. He's the #2 paid guy on the staff and he gets to see his results every single game. Not saying he wouldn't be a great head coach, but just because an assistant coach is good in his one area (defense, offense, special teams) doesn't necessarily mean he'd be good as a head coach.

(edit for additional comment)
There was a thread over on Bucknuts (although I'm on posting hiatus I still peruse the place) about Speilman being an assistant coach. I think he'd be a killer coach, and if D'Antonio ever did leave, I'd get Speilman first...he really knows his $h!t about defense, and football as a whole.

To add some insight here about Ohio State and the defensive schemes that they use. It is true that Dantonio used his defenses, to destroy Ohio State in 1998 that very well could have cost us a N/C. Bob Stoops learned alot of defensive football his father Ron Stoops. But his life was taken at such a short period in 1988. His uncle Bob Stoops was then, very instrumental in bringing added knowledge in defenses for his nephew.

Uncle Bob Stoops at the time was an assistant defensive coach at YSU under Jim Tressel and the two were like hand in glove - so to speak. Just like Steve Spurrier and Bob Stoops were the same way at Florida in 1996 and years to follow. When Bob Stoops of Oklahoma was awarded the BCS bowl championship game against Florida State, he sent a Christmas gift to his uncle. A round trip air fare ticket to Miami to watch the Sooners win it all in 2000. What a wonderful gesture.

So if you look at it from this point, over who is using who's defensive schemes. Well they almost damn near mirror each other. Other than the fact, that the Sooners may have a better defensive secondary strategy and this could have been one reason Dantonio and Tressel wanted to see if they could compare the two. So maybe some day an Ohio State / Oklahoma N/C game will come to fruition. Yeah It would be a real bitch if that would take place this year. But in the future, it could be a reality. What press stories would they be - if this ever happened. I can just imagine.

That would be a neat thing. The press focusing on the Youngstown connection between everyone.

Good points Kippy.

Dantonio leaving has concerened me for sometime. After the scum game of 2001 actually. I am a little more relaxed to hear that he wants to stay on at tOSU for a while.
I do have some questions though on the other assistant coaches that were at the start of this thread. When were some of them on the staff? I know Harris, but Carroll, Saban, and Zook especially. Also there were 2 coaches who left after the Rose Bowl, Harris and I can't remember the other one, someone please help me out on that.
The Miami thing though they don't call it the Cradle of Coaches for nothing. There is a book out there call the Cardle of Coaches that talks about why Miami and goes into great depth about the programs history. It is a good read little slow but a good read.

I hope Dantonio stays as long as Tressel, but don't put too much stock in comments about his plans. I have never known a coach to answer the 'are you leaving?' question, with anything other than 'No, I am happy right where I am.'

In general you don't want an assistant on your staff who is happy being an assistant.

As for Spiels - I love him. Let him come in and coach LBs or special teams, et al. I would be very disappointed if they let him start out at DC - as would the other assistants IMO.
