tOSU Recruiting Discussion

First, I think Lattimore is too electric to play DB but he certainly is good enough to. But I don't think either position is more stacked than the other. In '13 we got Conley, Burrows, and Apple at corner. This year we already have a stud in Webb and are in on many more. Plus I am betting on Paris Cambell getting an offer soon and I see him as a corner. I think WR is actually a tad less crowded actually...a lot of attrition from the '12 class, Wilson and Marshall are moreso hybrids with only Clark and Smith as true receivers in '13. I think Lattimore could play either the hybrids or split out wide...I think we have guys like Autry up for the hybrid, so I would love to see Harris, Lattimore, and Kitt outside, Autry inside to go with Marshall and Wilson from this year.

You see Cambell as a corner? I hadn't heard that about him yet. Everything I've heard is a slot-back like Wilson and he certainly looks it based on his film.

Ideally I'd like 3 true WRs (Lattimore, Harris, then Kitt/Thompson/Scott), two slot-backs (Autry and Cambell) and then Jalen Hurd as the RB.

Regarding the DBs, we've stacked up the past two years (Powell, Reeves, Bogard and Murray in 2012 and Apple, Burrows, Thompson, Conley and Bell in 2013) so I think we can take Webb and then an elite OOS CB like Peppers to go with one safety (Nicholson or Laurence Jones; I think we have a better shot at Nicholson). There might also be room for a player like Darius West to hop on board as well.

.. Our class might be finished before the end of March.

Which is why I'm considering not looking at this thread until November. Call me crazy but I've been so thrilled with the 2013 class that I kinda forgot just how special the 2012 class was. Seriously, if you go from the UFM hire to his first NLOID it's like this..

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVLWsHjVu9Y"]Evan Turner Game Winning Buzzerbeater Vs Michigan - YouTube[/ame]

Now give UFM an entire year and a 12-0 season...

Now Muck has already got a list that might very well be 18-20% complete on Feb 10th?

Kinda just makes me want to go back and watch the development of that Evan Turner shot.

Numbers are going to be tight. We are in on a bunch of highly regarded players, but even if they all wanted to commit, they couldn't.

Right now, we have to be looking at Lattimore, Booker, and McMillan as a part of this class. Plus at least 2 more OLinemen. Who knows what is going to happen with Berger and Garrett, but guessing we get at least one.

That would put us at 11 already. For a small class. It's a little difficult to see how the numbers are going to work out, but the staff has to be selective.

I was just thinking about this myself. Bank projected 18-20 in his signing day live chat.

Committed
1 Marcelys Jones (OL)
2 Damon Webb (DB)
3 Kyle Trout (OL)
4 Lawrence Marshall (DE)
5 Parris Campbell Jr. (ATH)

Ohio locks
6 Marshon Lattimore (ATH)
7 Erick Smith (DB)
8 Kyle Berger (LB/DE)
9 Dante Booker (LB/DE)

Michigan quasi-locks (thank you coach Coombs)
10 Malik McDowell (DL/OL)
11. Drake Harris (WR)

OOS looking real good
12. Jarmarco Jones (OL)
13. Raekwon McMillan (LB)
14. Clifton Garrett (LB)
15. Jeb Blazevich (TE)
16. Myles Autry (ATH)
17. Demarre Kitt (WR)

Position we're almost certainly going to fill but with who?
18. QB (DeShaun Watson?/best available)
19. OL (Orlando Brown Jr.?/best available)
20. OL (Damien Prince?/Roderick Johnson?/best available)
21. RB (Jalen Hurd?/best available)

Attrition #s? and/or too good to say no?
22. DB (over a dozen to choose from)
23. ATH/WR (Lonnie Johnson?/Thaddeus Snodgrass?/best available)
24. DL (Lorenzo Carter?/best available)
25. best available?
26. best available?

Going up to 21, that would put the class at

QB: 1
RB: 1
WR/ATH: 5
TE: 1
OL: 5
DL: 2
LB: 4
DB: 2

The numbers are going to be especially tight at the WR/ATH spot.

Way too early to know for sure, but it is really hard seeing this class not being crazy good (again).

I'm concerned about that as well. Right now, Thad Snodgrass and Lonnie Johnson would commit if we wanted. But you have to save spots for someone like Marshon Lattimore, Drake Harris, Jalen Hurd, or Braxton Berrios. They're in on a ton of guys here, but can realistically only take 2-3 at the most.

We loaded up this last class on DBs. But you can't turn down guys like Peppers, Blanding, or Tabor if you can get them. And if you want to compete with the SEC, you have to chase these guys.

I'm all in with this national strategy we had last class. I'd like to see it continue. I just don't see how it's feasible with the numbers.

I feel like we're Tejas from a few years ago... Our class might be finished before the end of March... However I trust our coaches more than Tejas's

I'm thinking it gets to 10 pretty quick. Then a few more over the summer. We could be just about finished with Ohio recruiting by then.

But with the amount of national and southern kids we are after, I think there will be a lot of kids who wait until the All Star games or signing day.

I think that is a pretty ideal scenario actually. Build a really solid foundation with a lot of Midwestern kids, with an emphasis on locking down Ohio. Fill most of your biggest needs, like OL and LB. Then you can go swing for the fences on some longer shot guys without being too worried if you miss.

Plus, leave a few spots for late bloomers, like James Clark, and kids impacted by coaching changes, like Dontre Wilson.

I doubt they are locks, but we are in solid position for sure.
