2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Not Wade but we talk occasionally. I think we have a good shot at Walker but have some ground to cover. We need to hit a home run on the OV but if we do, I wouldn't be shocked to see him in this class. And I think you just take him if he wants in and keep pursuing NPF hard no matter what.
Not sure if I’m the only one who has watched the film of NPF but I’m just a huge fan. I just love his game. The dude is running all over the field looking for ways to impact the game. And when he locks in he wants to destroy you.

He’s elite and will win you a NC with what he brings. He’s the kind of guy who you build around in a position group. And considering how important a LT is and how thin our depth is, he would be absolutely the biggest recruit in the class IMO. Just reading the 247 sports review of him with Wiltfong, Simmons, etc where they justify his #1 rating with 247 makes me drool. Wiltfong talks about him taking guys 12-15 yards downfield and Simmons says he will be one of the most impactful freshman lineman in football. If the staff can land him he will get minutes in ‘18 and is a starter in ‘19 IMO.

THE HURRY UP: OFFENSIVE TACKLE RASHEED WALKER FINALIZES OFFICIAL VISIT WHILE OHIO STATE OFFERS DEFENSIVE END JAVONTAE JEAN-BAPTISTE

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Jean-Baptiste is considered the 21st-best outside linebacker and No. 313 prospect overall in the Class of 2018, but most schools are recruiting him as a hybrid end. He recorded 88 tackles, 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery at state power Bergen Catholic and holds nearly two dozen offers from programs such as Boston College, Connecticut, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Jean-Baptiste came onto Ohio State’s radar when defensive coordinator Greg Schiano dropped by his school in December. The two have maintained contact since, with Meyer calling to extend the offer on Tuesday afternoon. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is supposed to stop by Bergen later this week, as well.

Jean-Baptiste has taken official visits to Boston College and Virginia Tech, with a trip to Nebraska looming this upcoming weekend. He’ll then take an official visit to Ohio State the same weekend as Walker, Dec. 20.

AND

“It's a huge opportunity, and it's been a goal and dream of mine ever since I was a little kid,” Kutscher told Eleven Warriors. “I have been a Buckeyes fan my whole life, and I worked really hard to get this opportunity in the classroom and on the field.”

The 6-foot-1, 186-pound Kutscher was named second-team all-district as a senior after he hauled in 93 catches for 1,350 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also recorded 39 tackles and one forced fumble as a free safety, helping the Tigers to the Divison II state semifinals.

“I think that just my route-running and my ability to make plays with the ball in my hands impressed them,” Kutscher said.

Kutscher holds double-digit scholarship offers from programs like Ashland, Malone, Saginaw Valley State, Walsh and Wheeling Jesuit, but a chance to play for his favorite team will be difficult to pass up.

“I plan on attending Ohio State,” he said, noting he wants to take a trip to campus and get financial aid worked out before making a final decision. “I feel like I could earn a spot.”

For once, I agree with diddy. Get the guys you absolutely need at DE & OT, then swing for the fences with the other guys (Surtain, Campbell, etc). Shouldn't have a problem with the number with the guys leaving for the league and transfers in the offseason
Ah yes, the classic end of season attrition

Absolutely. We are at 86 right now. Room will not be an issue.

I'm not being snarky if you're being sarcastic... I'm just being realistic.

By my count, as we sit currently with what we know... with the transfers we have had, the early NFL departures we have had thus far, and still counting Nick Conner on the team (who was "confirmed" to have a medical hardship in the rumor mill that has yet to be confirmed by the staff), we could take on a 21 man class right now in 2018 without any further attrition. At this moment, we have a 22 man recruiting class in the 2018 class. That's 86 scholarships.

2 of the 4 players that had already redshirted and did not play this year have transferred out of the program, and we have yet to hear about a decision on the other 2 (not naming names) plus there is the possibility of others that are somewhat expected or unexpected (ala Trevon Grimes). Still could have Dre'mont Jones (good probability), Campbell, Dixon, or Hill announce for the NFL draft. Still could have medical hardships after AJ Alexander's recent announcement (including Nick Conner) between now and the start of next season. Still could have transfers or graduate transfers (including Joe Burrow, who admittedly has a humongous decision to make) between now and the start of next season. That's quite a bit of potential further attrition... and we're already at 21 as we currently sit.

I mean, anyone... tell me where we will be at scholarship-wise at the start of the season or what this staff will do if a 5* talent wants in this class. I will tell you Urban will find a way to make it happen... because great bet in the end is that we will end up having room despite this staff's best efforts or thoughts

I can tell you that at this time last year, we were looking at at least the same type of attrition needed (3) and we ended up with the appropriate attrition needed to get to 85, plus we had enough room to give 2 walk-ons a scholarship (Goins, Turnure) this past year...

No sarcasm from my post, sorry for the confusion. Just waiting for the inevitable season of attrition that is coming soon

Bill K has an article that touches on something I have wondered as it pertains to class size if we had a dream finish. He mentions the staff having slotted 3 for DE from the outset and the thinking that Friday and Jean Baptiste filling those slots to go with Tyreke.

He also mentions Walker as a strong possibility at a much, much needed OT spot. So that puts the class at 25.

Could a dream finish of those guys with NPF make the class go to 26? He seems to think it could as they wouldn't turn any of those guys down, especially Walker, NPF and Friday.

I fully realize the likelihood of landing all 4 is extremely slim and landing 3 of 4 would be incredible in itself but if the class for some reason ends up at 26 with those 4 it would be unreal and address absolutely every need..........more than adequately.
