2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

How Ohio State blended its sales pitch, graphics to impress 2018 signees

The most important part of the pitch is the strength of what Ohio State is selling. After that, the Buckeyes can get a little creative with the presentation as they go to work on the recruiting trail.

Relationships, the chance to compete for championships, the value of the school’s education, the bond with future teammates and programs such as Real Life Wednesdays are among the factors that have helped Ohio State reel in some of the best signing classes in history. And those, again, clearly were invaluable as the Buckeyes cleaned up with the Class of 2018, which finished No. 2 nationally and rated among the most impressive batches of athletes in recent memory, according to talent evaluators.

But Ohio State also has invested in some talented behind-the-scenes staff members who are tasked with reinforcing that message in different ways ― from a presence on social media all the way down to unusual graphics edits that feature the recruits and make it easier to picture them in scarlet and gray.

With the signatures collected and a handful of the early enrollees already going through winter conditioning, here’s a sample of how Ohio State helped market itself by blending a strong message with some buzzworthy artwork.

Cornerback pipeline

Make no mistake, Ohio State’s ridiculous run of cranking out draft picks at cornerback over the last few years is well-known by the top prospects around the country. But seeing Bradley Roby, Eli Apple, Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore lined up in a row with a locker reserved for a touted talent such as Sevyn Banks helps crystallize the fact that Ohio State has proves it can be a pathway for defensive backs straight to the NFL. And in the version for the 2019 recruiting class, it’s going to have to make even more room for projected first-round pick Denzel Ward to squeeze into the picture.

The Brotherhood

The importance of creating a strong, familial bond with teammates has taken hold within the program, and now Ohio State appears to be making sure that future players are thinking with that mindset. Pairing up two of the nation’s most coveted offensive linemen in one graphic helps reinforce how dynamic the unit could be with both in the fold, while driving home the value of brotherhood with some bold letters right in the middle. With Nicholas Petit-Frere pledging to the Buckeyes on National Signing Day after center Matthew Jones committed, the Buckeyes landed both big, athletic blockers.

GA LB Brenton Cox just entered the Transfer Portal. Considering there was mutual interest before he chose UGA, anyone think there might be that mutual interest again?

Considering he was committed to us at one point, I'd say yes. He got into trouble at UGA over a weed arrest, so our staff would have to vet him, but this would help fill a big hole in this class

No thanks. While I'm sure he's a great talent, we all know you don't get booted from a program over just a weed arrest... especially when you've got that kind of talent.
