tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Can you blame him after all the negativity surrounding the program? 7-1 and #8 in the country and you would think they were 2-6 (like the Huskers....lol) and the sky was falling in Columbus.

There are a lot of people out there that really want Urban to fail in Columbus and will print whatever while there is blood in the water.

Lots of playing time available at the skill positions at OSU next year. Should be seeing more playmakers in this class at this point.

Maybe we will start to press Ohio a little more with us falling flat a little nationally?

IMO this will be one of our better classes for that reason alone.

Could be, and I always love when recruits have special powers, but I don't think it'll mean that much better of a class.

Shouldn't forget that 10 years ago there was a lot of lamentation over Tressel not being capable of grabbing elite OOS talent or closing on signing day. It seems to swing back and forth depending on the problem. If there are more OOS recruits, the team doesn't care as much and doesn't have heart. If the recent classes are mostly from Ohio, they're MSU/Wisconsin level talents not up the athletic standards of Bama or whatever elite team we're comparing OSU to.

Agree, but there is something to be said about the rapidly decreasing number of Ohio kids on the roster, especially the higher ranked kids that go on to play in the big 10, are successful, but not good enough to play for OSU.

I've always felt there needed to be a balance between the 2 while still going after some of the best athletes in the country and keeping the best in the state @ home. Urban has lost that balance and probably lost that "In" with a lot of Ohio HS coaches bc of that lack of attention to Ohio.

Where I think some people have an issue recently is when it appears the team has quit and there isn't an emotional attachment to the school or state, or sense of pride regarding their performance and the uniform they have been given the priveledge to wear.

They don't see it that way and they view tOSU as an opportunity, a business, a stepping stone, a path to the NFL. Losses, conference championships, Bowl Games, and playing for Natty's don't seem to matter as much. And this is becoming a Nat'l epidemic, not just an OSU problem.

I scanned the bench at the end of the Purdue game and I'll be honest, it was alarming to see how much laughing and giggling was going on. Not sure how much it means to some of the players. That game was embarrassing, especially the effort in the 4th quarter after re-watching it. Guys looking to move on before really leaving a legacy behind at the University they attended. A farm system for the pros.

The game has changed. Man, I'm sounding (and getting) old.

Agreed all the way around... it should be a balance of the two. Personally I'd prefer a little bit more from Ohio than what we've done lately.

To those who think there should be some magically balance between the number of in-state and out-of-state kids on the roster, you take the best talent you can get regardless of where they're from. There have been plenty of out-of-state kids who have dreamt of playing for Ohio State. And if you think simply being from Ohio guarantees some sort of "emotional attachment" to the school over a desire to play in the pros, just look at the past Cotton Bowl with Macedonia-native Denzel Ward sitting out so he wouldn't get hurt before the combines. I have zero problems with kids coming to Ohio State not because they love Ohio State but rather think it's a great platform to help prepare them for the pros. But if there happens to be some sort of let down and apparent quitting, that's as much on the coaching staff as it is the players.

As for "balance", the current decade-long king of college football Alabama has 39 of 115 players (34%) from the state of Alabama. They have players from the following states other than Alabama:

Arkansas (1)
California (6)
Wash, DC (1)
Florida (12)
Georgia (7)
Hawaii (1)
Iowa (1)
Indiana (1)
Kentucky (2)
Louisiana (10)
Maryland (5)
Missouri (1)
Mississippi (3)
North Carolina (1)
Ohio (1)
Oklahoma (1)
Pennsylvania (1)
South Carolina (4)
Tennessee (2)
Texas (12)
Utah (1)
Virginia (1)

That's 22 states (well, 21 states and DC). They have 41 players alone from the talent-rich states of Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas...more than they do from their own home state. And they were able to convince some kid from Eva Beach, Hawaii to come to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for 3-4 years. They get the best they can from wherever they can.

I'd like to see more Ohio recruits as well, and there have been a few big misses, but if you're filling out your roster based on trying to fill a state quota, you'll be in trouble sooner than later.

You have to trust your scouting of talent and personality and go after your top targets. Can't pick and choose because you think one player will have more heart based on geography. Ohio is a great football state but you're not going to have 13+ top recruits every year.

Again. Another Alabama comparison. 1 program. The top program in this decade. I'm sure Saban is dealing with the same issues. They are just on another level right now. Apparently they have enough talent and better coaching to overcome these issues bc they don't lose by 30 when they lose and Saban's teams don't quit in the 4th quarter when things get tough.

Closet Bama fan?

I get what you are saying though. Just keep in mind that Urb is one the most successful coaches of all time. If he has problems with his squad from year to year then just imagine what it must be like to be a fan of other programs. Others outside of Saban’s of course.

It is difficult physically and mentally to prepare every week for a new opponent. However when you have an additional 2-3 bye weeks every year (Citadel, Arkansas State, LA-Lafayette, Mercer, Fresno State, Chattanooga, Kent State, Western KY) it makes it easier to avoid the total letdown. I am not defending or excusing what happened against Purdue this year and Iowa last year. They were bad performances by the team and coaches. But if you are going to make Alabama the gold standard, you must also state that one of the ways Alabama maintains this image is to play by a different set of rules than tOSU.
