tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Why is everyone on Twitter posting Boom gifs and Steak emojis I am failing to make the connection

Getting ready for the impending commits in the next few days to weeks. The kids and coaches always know stuff that we don't. But don't want to steal a kid's thunder, so the emoji still keep the secret while just providing a subtle hint

Recruiting rankings in their current form have been around since 2002. Scout provides a listing for each school of their top rated recruits during that period.

Sixteen of OSUs highest rated 42 recruits are either on the current roster or committed for next year. (17 if we get JTT.) That also includes 3 of the top 5 (4 of the top 6 with JTT). That number approaches 40% of that group of 42 (or 43 with JTT). And this doesn't include kids who left early or kids like Fields who transferred in. And if you dropped back to the class of 2017 you pick up Young, Okudah, Browning, Wade and Davis.

I find that an amazing trend line.

Ohio State All Time Football Recruits

Check out this list: https://247sports.com/college/ohio-state/Sport/Football/AllTimeRecruits/

Three of the top 5 all time recruits haven't even played a down yet; #1 will be a senior in HS this fall. It's a very impressive list. Yeah, a few of them, let's say "disappointed" (i.e. didn't live up to expectations and/or their potential for one reason or another); however, the vast majority were or will be stars.

:oh:....:io:

Looking at our 25 highest ranked recruits again and noticed something interesting.

If you look at the 13 recruits in our most recent classes (since 2013) all are either still with the program or have completed stellar careers.

However, if you look at the 12 recruits from 2012 and prior it is a very different story.

Pryor, Ginn, Wells, Boone, Whitner and Brewster all pretty much lived up to the hype.

But the story of the other six is a bit different.

#7 Noah Spence (2012) contributed for two years before being booted for drug issues.
#10 Sammy Maldonado (2000) was so-so for two years before transferring to Maryland.
#19 Mike D'Andrea (2002) had his entire career derailed by injuries.
#21 Marco Cooper (2000) was another player with drug issues.
#22 Derek Morris (2002) was a head case who never suited up.
#25 Jamario O'Neal (2005) was an underachiever who - by his own admission - never took his opportunity as seriously as he should.

These were all 5 star athletes - with a 50% failure rate. Since so many of the more current 13 are still with the program we could yet have some flame outs that dipped our success rate below 100%. But I prefer to think that the focus on character espoused by Meyer and Day are a contributing factor to our more recent success.

Thinking about our WR recruiting over the past few classes. How many other schools have a recruiter/position coach like Hartline, who not only played at the school he works for, but excelled and has professional experience in the NFL? This has to be a huge advantage.

Alabama and RBs is probably the closest comparison, although I have no idea if they’ve even had the same position coach consistently there.
