The "Alabama" half of that hypothetical class is rapidly disappearing. Crystal balls rolling in for Mekhail Sherman to Georgia, Kelee Ringo to Texas, and Bijan Robinson to that football mecca, UCLA. Evan Rakim Jarrett, who once seemed nearly a lock, is now shaky (and my guess is that he ends up at Clemson, UGa, or Bama).

It's looking more and more like this will be a Tressel class, Ohio-heavy with lots of kids that are sleepers/projects/suspects depending on your point of view. Buckeye fans are going to miss Urban Meyer on the recruiting trail.

I can agree with this take, as Day is still a very young pup in the coaching world, and is going head to head with the big dogs. He has the backing of the OSU name, but his personal name doesn't hold the same weight as Dabo, Smart, Saban or even Herman(and definitely not Meyer). It will take time(and titles) before he can win some of those battles, but the fact that he has a great coaching staff behind him that can all recruit their butts off will sure help.
And like @Taosman said, "winning is the cure for everything"

For a little perspective, these are Dabo’s class rankings at Clemson:

2019: 10th
2018: 7th
2017: 16th
2016: 11th
2015: 9th
2014: 16th
2013: 15th
2012: 20th
2011: 10th
2010: 27th
2009: 36th


Recruiting championships are fun, and you can definitely win that way (Bama), but getting the right guys who fit your system and your culture can be a winning blueprint too. You still need the 4 and 5 star kids, but you can win without your entire class being made up of them if you have the right coach and staff.

Based on volume. In stars, they take a back seat to no one:

Signees:

Deon Cain, Christian Wilkins, Ray-Ray McCloud, Dexter Lawrence, Rahshaun Smith, Tre Lamar, A.J. Terrell, Tee Higgins, Hunter Johnson, Trevor Lawrence, Xavier Thomas, Justyn Ross, Jackson Carman, K.J. Henry, Derion Kendrick

Breakdown: Not only does Clemson dominate five-star recruiting in the ACC but coach Dabo Swinney and his staff have done a phenomenal job developing those players and maximizing their abilities on the field. Lawrence, the top-rated prospect in the 2018 class, took over the starting job this season and led the Tigers to a national championship. His favorite targets were Ross and Higgins. Wilkins and Lawrence were keys to arguably the best defensive line in college football. Thomas is unquestionably a future star at defensive end. Lamar is a top linebacker. Terrell had a pick-six for the first score in a blowout win over Alabama in the national title game. The list of success stories goes on and on. The only real miss was Johnson, who lost the starting quarterback battle and decided to transfer to Northwestern.

Farrell’s take: Clemson has been recruiting on a level with Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and a rare few others when it comes to five-stars, as evidenced by the two national titles. Swinney is one of the best recruiters in the country and I would expect this number will either stay the same or increase over the next few cycles. The Tigers are in a class by themselves in the ACC because most of their five-stars develop.

That 2018 class was ranked 9th. It had 6 five stars, including immediate all-american level talents in Lawrence & Ross. Xavier Thomas is next (oh and they also had KJ Henry as a 5 star DL).

Those last two are replacing their departing 5-star DL.


Clemson had less talent during the last NC, but they also had the superstar in Deshaun

Clemson lands some studs, but they still take plenty of lower rated kids. Three stars by year:

2018: 5
2017: 4
2016: 8
2015: 12
2014: 9
2013: 11
2012: 10
2011: 20
2010: 15


Has their ratio evened out the last few years? Sure. But he built up the Clemson program on those lower rated kids and still takes as many, if not more, than a lot of the other premier programs.

I don't understand why the Trinity Christian players Fred Davis & Miles Brooks are not scheduled to come visit in March or April. With Shaun Wade, Tyreke Johnson & Marcus Crowley on the team, Ryan Day & Jeff Hafley should make both of these Cornerbacks top priorities. I know that Davis has visited Clemson but Clemson took a few cornerbacks in the 2018 while the Buckeyes took none. These players have length and cover ability that's needed to play and compete at the highest level. If Davis prefers Clemson then that's his decision but I would still go after Brooks and work to get him in the 2019 class. Others can agree/disagree but that's what I would do if I were Day & Hafley. Undersized corners does not work anymore in college football if you want to win National Championships. They just throw the ball high and your undersized corner can't reach it no matter how good they are. See it all the time every college football Saturday.

The best part is tsun fans reciting this like a mantra to convince themselves all is well with Jimmy.

The slight incongruity between the on field results of the two practitioners of this dark art aren't mentioned as much (or are rationalized by other elements of the DFBIA canon).
