2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Not OSU related, but:

One of Michigan's top recruits so far. His de-commitment drops Michigan from #13 to #19 nationally. #HarbaughEffect

Early crystal ball for Kentucky.

Go figure...:roll1:..Currently the "crystal ball" is 50% (with only 2 predictions) one for both Kentucky (warm) and Ohio State (none) even though 24/7 indicates that Ohio State hasn't even offered him a scholarship: https://247sports.com/player/kalil-branham-46040367/

It does look like most of his offers are from 1) 2nd tier conference schools, i.e. Akron, Marshall, Youngstown State, Kent State, and Toledo, etc. and 2) "bottom feeding" Power 5 conference schools, i.e. scUM, Kansas, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech, etc.

Also, both 24/7 and Rivals list Al Washington as scUM's recruiter for his services. I would think that if Ohio State would want him we might/would have an "in" there with Al Washinton.

Now 3 CBs for Kentucky.

Bill Greene discusses the Spring Game and recruiting (Michael Carmody, Paris Johnson, Darrion Henry, Jaheim Thomas, Michael Drennen, DeaMonte Trayanum, and Luke Lachey):

Greene with a prophetic comment on the Spring Game:

They want to get everyone into this "game", for lack of a better word, so they're gonna put the walk-on safety, they'll throw him out there and let him play cornerback. He can't cover tight ends as a safety, now he's gotta cover Austin Mack. So Austin Mack runs by him, makes a touchdown, and it's like "Austin Mack is so much better!" No, he was guarded by a guy who's as fast as Dave Biddle.

In actual fact: Justin Fields to Binjimen Victor for a 98-yard touchdown, with walk-on DB Lloyd McFarquhar in single coverage.

OHIO STATE'S SPRING GAME RECRUITING SPECTACLE, FORMER PLAYER REUNION GOES ON UNINTERRUPTED WITHOUT URBAN MEYER

103658_h.jpg

Dwayne Haskins knew exactly what he was doing.

At 10:47 a.m. on Saturday, he entered Ohio Stadium for the spring game through the exact same gates he walked though 364 days before. But instead of the cut-off scarlet sweatshirt, headband, headphones around his ears, backpack and rolled-up gray football pants with pads underneath he wore last year, Haskins rocked a black sweatshirt with black sweatpants and a watch befitting of a fashion-conscious, soon-to-be first-round NFL quarterback. And rather than swing his knee brace around in his right hand as he headed toward the locker room, he had his right arm draped around Justin Fields.

Photographers snapped photos of the quarterback duo. Reporters captured videos of them smiling and chatting as they walked into the stadium together.

A complete and total spectacle. Exactly what Ryan Day hoped. And things were just getting ramped up.

Even with Urban Meyer nowhere to be found, Ohio State managed to turn the spring game into what at times early in the afternoon felt like more a recruiting extravaganza and former player reunion than an actual football game. A seemingly endless supply of high-school prospects surrounded the field with dozens of NFL players.

Maximizing brand awareness is as important of a task as anything for a college football head coach at a powerhouse program. While everything on the field on Saturday was aimed at preparing the Buckeyes for the 2019 season, what was happening around it served to put the program in an advantageous position moving forward.

The tunnel in the south-east corner of Ohio Stadium served as a de facto red carpet of the stars – or, effectively, the four-stars and five-stars.

First came a trio of 2020 commits: five-star offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr., four-star cornerback Lejond Cavazos and four-star quarterback Jack Miller.

Johnson, the No. 4 overall prospect in his class, has worried Ohio State fans recently, taking a tour of the SEC complete with visits to Tennessee, Alabama, LSU and Georgia. But ever the showman, the towering lineman descended down the tunnel with Miller – the team’s quarterback of the future – and Cavazos, who committed to the Buckeyes for a second time on Friday evening.

Johnson has seemingly flirted with decommitting from Ohio State due to Meyer’s retirement, but he remains in the eight-player 2020 class. Miller, whose dad is friends with Meyer, committed to play for the Buckeyes in part due to the now-retired head coach, yet he remains in the class. Cavazos actually did decommit when Meyer announced his impending retirement, but Day helped bring him back into the fold.

Meyer wasn’t at Ohio Stadium on Saturday. But those three prospects were, and they opened the floodgates.

Cade Stover, a four-star linebacker signee from Lexington, made an appearance along with 2020 commit Jakob James, a three-star tackle from Cincinnati. Trey Leroux, a three-star tackle from Norwalk, took the walk into the stadium.

Darrion Henry, an uncommitted four-star defensive end from Cincinnati, ventured down the tunnel 10 minutes after Johnson, a fellow Cincinnatian, arrived.

More and more kept coming.

Five-star 2021 defensive end commit Jack Sawyer. Four-star 2021 defensive end target Najee Story. Four-star 2021 quarterback target Kyle McCord. Four-star 2020 wide receiver target LV Bunkley-Shelton. Four-star 2020 wide receiver target Marvin Harrison Jr. Four-star 2020 wide receiver commit Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Four-star 2021 offensive tackle target Donovan Jackson. Four-star 2021 wide receiver target Jayden Ballard. Five-star 2019 center signee Harry Miller. Four-star 2021 linebacker target Yanni Karlaftis. Four-star 2021 linebacker target Reid Carrico, who received an offer from the Buckeyes on Saturday before the spring game.

And that’s just a taste of the procession of prospects. They littered the field before the game.

Sawyer and Henry stood on the grass to watch the defensive linemen warm up. Stover chatted up Sam Hubbard. Jack Miller walked onto the field with Haskins to stand with Justin Fields and Matthew Baldwin as they warmed up.

All of them made the trip to Columbus to see the Buckeyes play their first game of the Day era, so Ohio State made sure they got a taste of star power by hosting as many former players as possible.

During a timeout in the first half, a group of players from last year's team – Haskins, Dre'Mont Jones, Johnnie Dixon, Michael Jordan, Mike Weber, Terry McLaurin, Isaiah Prince and a few others – walked out to midfield to receive their part-Big Ten championship, part-Rose Bowl rings.

Before the game even finished, photos of recruits posing with former Ohio State players began to trickle out onto social media.

Interesting news about Branham considering UM was his dream offer and Ben McDaniels was telling them they see him as a 5-star recruit. Have to wonder if Gattis didn't see it the same way.

I have used HotMic's April "hunch" list as a starting point for a possible 2020 recruiting class.

Strike through = players who have committed elsewhere or who are long shots

Bold scarlet = hard verbal to Ohio State
Bold black = probable to Ohio State
Plain black = realistic possibility to Ohio State
Italics = my addition based on recent offers

QB: Jack Miller

RB: Miyan Williams

RB: Bijan Robinson
WR: Jaxon Smith-Njigba
WR: Gee Scott Jr.

WR: Marcus Rosemy

WR: Julian Fleming
WR: LV Bunkley-Shelton
HB: Michael Drennen II
TE: Luke Lachey
TE: Mark Redman (Washington)
OL: Trey Leroux
OL: Jakob James
OL: Luke Wypler

OL: Paris Johnson Jr.
OL: Reece Atteberry

OL: Michael Carmody
OL: Josh Priebe
DL: Jaheim Thomas
DL: Darrion Henry

DL: Deontae Craig
DL: Aaron Lewis (West Virginia)
DT: Terah Edwards (Northwestern)
LB: Kourt Williams II
LB: Jordan Banks
LB: Bangally Kamara
DB: Lejond Cavazos
DB: Henry Gray
DB: Rickey Hyatt Jr.

DB: Lathan Ransom
DB: Clark Phillips III
ATH: DeaMonte Trayanum
ATH: Cameron Martinez
ATH: Jutahn McClain
ATH: Evan Prater

First, I have Paris Johnson as a "probable" because he is taking official visits, which means he is far from a "lock" for this class.

The Buckeyes get their first real shot at Bijan Robinson this weekend, and if his visit goes well then maybe he moves into the "probable" category.

Kendall Milton visited recently and things apparently went well, but there has been no crystal ball action in favor of Ohio State, so I'd keep him in the long shot category for the time being.

Julian Fleming stays on the list as a realistic possibility, although I'd still put my money on Clemson at this point.

LV Bunkley-Shelton visited for the Spring Game and the Buckeyes garnered a CB, but I'd still have Ohio State trailing Southern Call at this point.

Rakim Jarrett has been talking Ohio State recently, but I will keep him in the long shot category until he makes an official visit. Right now, I've got Tennessee as the leader.

Offensive lineman Michael Carmody is certainly trending toward Ohio State and away from Penn State, and he is also a candidate to move into the "probable" category.

Henry Gray was probably the staff's sixth or seventh choice at cornerback, but he's still a good one and looks to be a Buckeye eventually.

Safety Rickey Hyatt from Westerville Central is a recent offer and should be verbal #9 very shortly.

Ohio State won't take seven OL, but I added OT Josh Priebe (Edwardsburg, MI) in case Carmody or Atteberry go elsewhere, or the unthinkable happens and Paris Johnson de-commits.

Running back Miyan Williams (Cincinnati Winton Woods) is a hot name right now, and could be a solid second RB option in this class. If he's the first option (meaning the Buckeyes missed out on both Bijan Robinson and Kendall Milton), then that's a problem.

Bangally Kamara (Akron East) is a local kid and the Buckeyes need linebackers, so I've added him as a possibility. He's more of a project than a prospect, but the Buckeyes need bodies and there don't seem to be many realistic options at this point in the process.

Jutahn McClain (Fairfield) does not have an Ohio State offer yet, and his skill set might duplicate Michael Drennen's, but he's another local kid who could merit a serious look.

Evan Prater (Wyoming) is an interesting prospect. He's a dual-threat QB in high school, and maybe he's good enough to provide QB depth for Ohio State. But at 6-foot-5, he might have a future as a WR in college. Evan's brother Garyn (himself 6-foot-4) is a walk-on WR at Ohio State.

This class badly needs DL and LB, and there just aren't many realistic names out there right now. Bryan Bresee is long gone (Clemson); Mikhail Sherman is fading fast (Georgia); Sav'ell Smalls is a pipe dream; Braiden McGregor is all blue; Tyler Baron visited Ohio State on Monday, and Bill Greene CB'ed him to Tennessee today. It looks like the staff will search for sleepers/projects/suspects to fill out the front seven on defense, not a viable recruiting strategy in the long run.

Clark Phillips III is a longshot?
If you want to say that Ohio State has a legit shot at Phillips because we're in his top five and he's (allegedly) making an official visit, then be my guest.

But using that argument, you'd also have to say that Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee have a legit shot at Paris Johnson.

I hear you. I was just wondering because, in my mind, it was him and Gray who were the most likely of the remaining uncommitted prospects at CB to be in this class. I figured since he's already taken an unofficial to OSU and is, as you say, allegedly going to make an official back that he was sincerely interested. I think his top four is OSU, ND, Utah and Cal. Seemed to me like we had as good a shot as anybody out of that allotment. I know it is hard to get kids from California to come across the country though. Disappointing that we aren't as much of a player for him as I thought.
