2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

That model of a "filler" type every other year makes sense but the more I think of it the more I think you'd want to add them to an elite guy.

I just can't wrap my head around seeing a day when a school like OSU passes on an elite prep QB because they took one the year before.

Get the best guys in and manage the chaos is more than likely what we'll see.
That's what I anticipate they'll do as well... just fun to talk ways to guard against this new issue.

Possibly, but if you sign a 3-star high school quarterback and turn him into a linebacker, and he develops into an All American caliber player (Darron Lee), then it kind of defeats the purpose. Whoever you sign as your "clipboard holders" have to spend the majority of their time in the quarterback room. Ideally what you are looking for are two or three Kenny Guitons, good soldiers with enough talent to win a few games in an emergency, but not enough talent to get grandiose ideas about starting.

I don't think it's a negative if a guy turns into Darron Lee. I don't expect that to happen too often. Maybe it more about just recruiting an athlete who is a high school QB that gives you the option to turn to a backup QB. You recruit one of those guys every year and if 1 or 2 out of 4 turns into your backup QB like Guiton then it works to protect the QB depth. If the others turn into Darron Lee or Jalin Marshall that is icing on the cake. Even if 1 out of 4 end up as Torrence Gibson or Verlon Reed, it still helps to protect QB depth because they at least gave you a season or two in the system if you needed them.

Maybe one will turn into Troy Smith and beats out your 4 or 5 star QB recruit.

Maybe. About as often as they turn in to Darron Lee.

Lets see that defense though!
I may be wrong, but I think this years defensive haul will pale in comparison to the offense due to all of the new coaches (I'd be happy to be wrong though). But I see 2021 where the defensive coaches hitting their stride and making inroads with the kids. Not enough time to make up the relationships with the top players but we can still get some under the radar and good talent on defense
