2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I'm still a little in awe in how impressive this 2020 class is that Day and Co. are compiling.

It's been talked about over and over how close this group is...not only the players but their families as well. Do no discount how important that can be.

Would put this class up there with the 2017 and 2018 classes that both finished #2 in the rankings. This class can still finish very strong just knowing how many of these players are expected to get ratings bumps (off the top of my head Scott, Cooper, Simon, Martinez and Hamilton should all move up with guys like Phillips, Ransom and Smith-Njigba also being possibilities).

I'll echo that for sure. I really didn't know what to expect on the recruiting end, at least not this early on. Blows my mind to think that most of the class will likely be full before the season starts and it's going to be a top 5 class. And the national recruiting reach has been astounding. Pulling Phillips from CA, Ransom from AZ, presumably Knighton from FL, presumably Kourt from CA, Scott from WA, Fleming from PA... and you could go on, but dear lord that's impressive. And then we locked up the guys we had to get in Ohio.

If Robinson, Knighton, and Kourt all go down (and I think they will), it will be interesting to see how we close out. Agreed we see the focus be one more DL and one more CB. No reason with most the class locked up to do anything but swing for the fences on the big names for the last remaining spots. Right now, that's Ricks and Ringo (likely in that order of probability/effort) at DB... we want one more and they're both easily top 5 CBs. Then on DL, we fight to the end on Broughton despite the odds, but in my eyes Cowan is 100% a take and immediately...really think he's a borderline 5 star talent. Those are the names I'm watching for now but you know others will pop up, particularly as we look for potential late flip candidates.

In any event, it's fun to watch us focus on big names knowing this class is set and the rest is gravy.

Why? Just wondering...

I'd think if we have 3 fellow AZ recruits it'd be easier to add Ringo who's obviously elite.

I don’t know that anything definitive has been said, but Birm was pretty emphatic about it during his exchange with Lamb on Twitter a few weeks back.

The fact that he’s so straightforward about it is enough for me. Sometimes kids just aren’t personality matches, I’m willing to guess that this is one of those situations.

I just wonder why we may have stopped recruiting him?

Probably hasn't shown enough genuine interests for Ohio State for the coaches to make him a priority. Can't get them all.

Ohio State for the most part, tends to target those sub-200lbs corners who are burners. Ringo of course has the size and speed, but you can't waste time on him if you feel confident you don't have a shot.

Not when there's other prospects out there that you might have a better shot at landing.

Obviously, I have no inner knowledge of the situation so there certainly can be other factors.

... but to be clear. I *really* think we need at least one more solid prospect at corner in this class.

We lose a couple this year and the depth is a bit concerning at the position.
We have over twice as many WRs on scholarship than we do CBs.

Well not that it makes it likely but it can't hurt.

I just wonder why we may have stopped recruiting him?
Trust the coaches is said way to often...and usually just as sour grapes. But if they aren't going after a 5 star kid who is that good, it's for reasons. Maybe he told them he 100% hates Ohio State. Maybe he was deemed as a bad fit. Maybe he did coke right in front of the president's mom. If they aren't chasing someone that good, it's for reasons that go beyond sour grapes.

Ohio State's stay at #2 in the recruiting rankings was shorter than I'd expected. Yesterday, Alabama received a commitment from 4-star defensive tackle Timothy Smith, and that moved the Tide ahead of the Buckeyes in the 247 Composite, 290.42 points to 288.74 points. For most of his recruitment, Smith had been considered a Clemson lean.

In related news, Alabama also received a commitment from top 2021 QB prospect Drake Maye.

Remember When You Were Worried About Ohio State’s Defensive Recruiting?

Cody-Simon-Ohio-State.jpg

“Does Ryan Day know there’s a defensive side of the ball?”

That was a popular refrain for a very long time regarding Ohio State’s 2020 recruiting class.

When spring ball started for the Buckeyes, there were six players committed. All six were offensive players.

Another offensive lineman — Trey Leroux — came on board early during spring camp, but it wasn’t until spring ball ended that Ohio State had their first defensive commitment.

Florida defensive back Lejond Cavazos, who had decommitted from Ohio State when Urban Meyer announced his retirement, recommitted at the end of spring football, finally giving the Buckeyes a precious defensive commitment.

But then came June and now there were 11 commitments, with Cavazos being the lone defender.

Chatter about Day’s knowledge of positional recruiting picked up again.

Day and his coaching staff, however, weren’t concerned, especially with their two biggest official visit weekends of the spring yet to come.

“Yeah, this this month is a big month for us,” Day said back in early June. “There were a couple of positions of need on offense and we’re working through all those, but it’s really what we’re gonna be at the end of June. That’s when I think we’ll have a better handle on the whole class.”

Day was correct.

Over the last two weeks of June, the Buckeyes landed commitments from 3-star Ohio defensive end Ty Hamilton, 4-star California cornerback Clark Phillips, 4-star Ohio defensive lineman Darrion Henry, and 4-star New Jersey linebacker Cody Simon.

And then the week after that, they received commitments from 3-star Maryland linebacker Mitchell Melton and 3-star Michigan athlete Cameron Martinez.

Looking back, it’s easy to see why there wasn’t as much concern inside the WHAC as there was outside the WHAC.

“I don’t feel we’re behind,” co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said in early June. “Personally, we had a little bit of a later start since some of these guys are being recruited in September and I’m working to play the Rams in September. But that’s okay.

“I think the staff, the defensive guys and even the offensive guys helping, that’s the cool thing. It’s not like it’s just defensive guys recruiting defensive guys. I think everyone’s doing a really good job. We’ve got some pretty good guys coming I for a visit and we’ll swing away. I’m not concerned. It’s Ohio State. We’ll be okay.”
