2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Agreed overall about the arms race, particularly with Clemson going unchecked at stockpiling superstars (which they've always done, but not at this volume).
Actually, it's only within the last few years (2018 and the current 2020 class) where Clemson has been ridiculous at getting 5-stars. Below is their 5-star total with overall ranking in parentheses for the last 10 years per 247:
2020: 6 (1) <-- still in progress and could have as many as 10 5-stars
2019: 1 (10)
2018: 5 (7)
2017: 2 (16)
2016: 1 (11)
2015: 3 (9)
2014: 0 (16)
2013: 1 (15)
2012: 0 (20)
2011: 3 (10)

You can see that from 2017 and earlier that Clemson has more than a pair of 5-stars only twice in seven classes, and had a three-class stretch where they snagged a single 5-star. What is surprising considering all of Clemson's success over the last four year was that last year's class (2019) for Clemson had only one 5-star with 12 4-stars and 15 3-stars, i.e., over half their class were 3-stars...now nearly every kid in the country seems to wants to play for Clemson.

I'd say their success shows the "moneyball" nature of position value in CFB today.

QB and DL are the two spots that superstars have the biggest impact.

You have to have talent everywhere else to compete for a NC but those are the two "Cadillac" positions in the modern game of football imo.

Give Haskins a normal OSU defense last year and they could have beaten anybody.

Absolutely .... DL and QB are the positions the modern game is played with at the elite level. And in that aspect, Ohio State lands their targets on a consistent basis.

On the DL, they tend to grab the highest rated player at their position. It's been a pretty impressive run honestly, and reflected in the NFL draft year after year.

which by extension then makes WR the type of position that RB used to be

You see it in the NFL and now it's making it's way into college. The game changer RB is less and less of a thing, the elite WR (or group of WR's where the 4th and 5th guy cant be covered by a S or LB) is the modern equivilant of student body left.

Aww man. Now we're going to have to find good WRs somewhere.

I’d care more if it was any other position than RB. So easily replaceable and so many other factors go into a RB’s success.

Low 4* Travis Etienne took 5* Tavien Feaster’s spot.

Only two of the top 50 NCAA RB’s in rushing yards in 2018 were 5*’s in high school. Number 15 Miles Sanders and #50 D’Andre Swift.

3 of the top 50 in YPC were 5* RB’s.

Guy at Landgrant Holyland has done a statistical analysis of recruiting between OSU and scUM.
Aside from the fact he probably has too much time on his hands to me his analysis points to why at the end of the season the best recruited teams will have a decided advantage.
Bama lost just this week or so a starting LBer and a 5 star running back. Are they going to be hurting at those positions? No! Not at all. In the Playoff era top recruiting rules. If we can escape a meltdown loss and win the Big we will go to the Playoffs.

After a few folks in the Steele Chambers thread expressed confidence in how well we should be a RB in the next few years, even if we whiff on one this recruiting class, I decided to take a look at the four main RBs that will be here in 2020 after Dobbins declares for the draft (eligibility after this season in parentheses):

McCall (Sr) 5'9", 195
Teague (RS So) 5'11", 220
Chambers (So) 6'2", 215
Crowley (So) 6'1", 205

I'm not sure McCall will be a consistent between-the-tackles runner like the other three and end up an H-back. I'm betting Teague will end up being the clear #2 RB by the time we roll up in to the Pig House. I'm also looking forward to seeing both Chambers and Crowley, and think they both can easily add 15-20 pounds to their frame while losing little, if any, of their speed and quickness...and they both could end up redshirting under the new rule that allows them to play in 30% of games at any time during the season without using up eligibility. We'll have three good-sized RBs (Teague for at least two more years and Chamber and Crowley for a minimum of three) for the near future. I think it would be good if we could somehow get a high 4-star RB this class, but if we don't I think we're going to be OK at the position for the next 2-3 years.

5* RBs are fun to get, but it's one of the positions I'm least concerned with stars. A look at tOSU's top RBs with their star and national ranks (per 247) over the past 15 years:

Antonio Pittman (2004-06) *** / NR
Beanie Wells (2006-08) ***** / #7
Boom Herron (2008-11) *** / #361
Carlos Hyde (2011-13) **** / #227
Zeke Elliott (2014-15) **** / #69
Mike Weber (2016-18) **** / #75
JK Dobbins (2017- ) **** / #46

Beanie was the only 5*, and he met the hype. Zeke/Weber/Dobbins were all high 4*/Top-100 kids...Zeke became an all-timer, Weber was very good, and the book's still open on Dobbins, but he's been very good. Pittman was a middling recruit who racked up 2600+ yards in 2 full seasons as a starter. Boom was a 3* kid who was excellent his last two years. Hyde was a mid-4* recruit who had two monster seasons before leaving for the NFL. So, we've traditionally recruited very well, but have gotten by with guys like Pittman, Boom and Hyde who weren't really "elite" recruits.

Lets see where the guys above checked in:

Demario McCall (2016- ) **** / #44
Master Teague (2018- ) **** / #228
Steele Chambers (2019- ) **** / #231
Marcus Crowley (2019- ) **** / #370

I have no doubt at least one of those guys becomes a star.
