2021 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

On today's Giv and Bank they discussed these uncommitted prospects..

1. Leigh they think going into the bash still has OSU 3rd behind LSU and OU. LSU kind of surprises me as I thought with the bigtime violations along with this year's blah team.. but they did say Leigh bringing his mom and brother will definitely help.

2. Davis they think is a better chance because he's been recruited for over two years and been to Columbus 11 times and is very comfortable there.
Davis knows the depth chart and it's not a problem that some gurus think it is.

3. They are hearing very optimistic things on Raesjon Davis from the staff. He won't be there this weekend but will visit soon. Bank thinks he'll be a Buckeye.

Also in the 11W Forum....OU Insider Drumm says Egbuka's dad has told him they will be in Norman for a visit soon. Drumm's "sources" have told him as soon as that plane lands in Norman you can add Emeka to their commit list. Not too sure how that's gonna work since the dead period will continue until at least Jan. but oh well.

Appreciate all the info you share, but be careful what you C&P from 11W. A few of those guys are notorious for posting incorrect information to support a narrative. I’ve read several things already today that were embellished pretty strongly (I read or listened to the interviews they referenced).

Edit: Not singling out 11W, every site has posters that do it. And to be clear, i’m referencing posters, not staff.

Using 247 rankings only that’s 5 of the top 10. Eghads.

What a great finish that would be.....don't care about final recruiting standings (well, not entirely true), but the HotMic finish would fill most of the needs that will certainly be there from graduations and leaving early. The 2022 class seems to be shaping up to equal or exceed the 2021 class, notably in the LB position and OL areas. Great time to be a Buckeye!

Seems like an okay finish to a decent class.

That gap is starting to look like the Grand Canyon

I thought I’ve heard 23 for this class is the number with the WA guys and Davis being the 3 that the staff are most heavily focused on. If, say Raesjon Davis doesn’t flip is there any OL or DL guys left to chase late in the cycle?

Don’t just post this. I demand you present conjecture.
According to the Ellis on 11W, he’s referring to Devonta Smith making his triumphant return to the class.

Someone other than Ellis.

Ellis confirming and elaborating.

Ding ding.

A few weeks back I heard there were some things going on with him and it would be worth watching. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I’m thinking Ohio State is going to have a decision to make (they’ve already been mulling it over for a while). I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until all of this gets to the Bama side and writers start bugging the kid and his family. Kind of annoying but it’s bound to happen and I know that’s how these things work.

No. 2: Buckeyes need get clarity on numbers

This bullet point was a bit vague, so clarity wasn’t going to be easy to identify. But it seems pretty clear that Ohio State is content signing just its 20 current commitments, if that is what ends up happening. The Buckeyes offered no new 2021 prospects and remain dialed in on just a quartet of players that they’ve been recruiting for more than a year: Emeka Egbuka, Tristan Leigh, J.T. Tuimoloau and Raesjon Davis.

That group, all 5-star prospects, seems pretty clearly to be the final stand in the 2021 class. That becomes important when considering that there were opportunities to add 2021 players in November and the Buckeyes chose not to.

With the first signing day period just about three weeks away, the Buckeyes could end up signing just 20 prospects. The numbers are definitely a concern, especially with the free year of eligibility for everyone on the current roster. The country’s most-talented prospects don’t pick schools to sit, and the roster makeup in 2021 — even with the annual rush of unexpected attrition we’ve seen year in, year out — doesn’t lend itself to taking late-in-the-recruiting-process risks.

No. 3: Ohio State needs to locate a 2021 offensive lineman
To the previous point, it appears the Buckeyes have made a decision that — barring a commitment from Tristan Leigh on Jan. 2 — no other offensive lineman was standing out as a necessary addition.

Maybe the free year of eligibility for the class of 2020 helps Ohio State stand pat at this position. But finding a way to pull off a big flip or somehow getting Tristan Leigh into the class would certainly be a welcomed outcome for the Buckeyes and would put them in position to win the 2021 recruiting “championship.”

The odds aren’t great for Ohio State to land Leigh as it seems Oklahoma is the favorite right now as it inches ahead of LSU. But with just three senior offensive linemen playing real minutes right now, maybe the need for the Buckeyes isn’t as great as it seemed earlier this season. Nicholas Petit-Frere has played well, but four games of starting tape may not provide the proof that NFL teams need to believe he’s ready for the next step yet.

Plus, the aforementioned eligibility retention means the program could have a potentially overwhelming number of linemen with freshman eligibility next year. Ohio State did sign six offensive linemen in the previous cycle, and only Harry Miller has really made an impact thus far from the four-man 2019 haul.

Ohio State needs to sign every current commitment in December
This may sound like a bit of a no-brainer, but in a year that’s been anything but routine, Ohio State needs to see signing day come and go without any unexpected hiccups from its current class. That means that everyone currently committed, from Kyle McCord to Denzel Burke and everyone in-between, needs to leave no doubt about their intentions for college.

So far, the Buckeyes have only experienced two decommitments in this cycle: In-state defensive back Devonta Smith and defensive line Tunmise Adeleye. Any further attrition or uncertainty is going to be very difficult to replace with the recruiting dead period extended until April. There’s no chance to go back to the well if someone flips away from Ohio State in this cycle, so it’s incumbent on Ryan Day, Mark Pantoni and the staff to avoid any negative surprises.

The good news for Ohio State is that there’s no real concern about any of the current commitments making that sort of decision. But as signing day gets closer, the nerves get touchier and the drumbeats from other schools — especially those closer to home for kids who’ve not even been able to visit Ohio State this point — get louder and louder. The relationships that the Buckeyes have cultivated over these last handful of months need to be better and stronger than any almost any recruiting relationships in modern history for that reason.

Buckeyes need answer from Emeka Egbuka before signing day
While Ohio State needs to sign every current commitment, if they want to catch Alabama as the country’s No. 1-ranked class, it will need to make an addition or two.

No uncommitted prospect has been on the board longer than 5-star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, and he’s still on the fence about his future. One way or the other, good or bad, the Buckeyes need to know if the Steilacoom (Wash.) standout is coming to Columbus to work with Brian Hartline or if he’s going to end up at Oklahoma or Washington. Egbuka is making his long-discussed visit to Oklahoma on Saturday as the Sooners host Baylor. And though he can’t meet with the coaching staff in Norman, there’s no doubt that any possible loophole to make him feel connected with Lincoln Riley’s staff is going to be exploited. He’ll be spending his time there with 5-star quarterback Caleb Williams, who has somehow already moved to Oklahoma while awaiting his January enrollment.

It is very difficult to be the unquestioned leader in a recruitment for an uncommitted prospect for almost two years, and that’s what the Buckeyes are up against in the battle for Egbuka. There’s always a pull to stay closer to home, which makes the hometown Huskies as much of a threat as Oklahoma. But no matter where he ends up, it’d be good for Ohio State to have a final answer before signing day. That way if Brian Hartline wants to add another receiver still in the 2021 class, he can make a move with a handful of targets that he’s remained in contact with over these last few months while prioritizing Egbuka.

That doesn’t mean the Buckeyes will get another receiver just because they offer, but time is obviously of the essence. That is also one thing that Ohio State hasn’t been able to have with Egbuka since his last trip to Columbus way back in October of 2019. He’s had multiple planned trips to Ohio State fall through because of the Covid-19 pandemic and was consistent in his messaging that no decision would be reached until he made a visit to Oklahoma. With that trip on deck, every school chasing the country’s No. 1-ranked receiver is hoping for a final choice sooner rather than later.
