2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Ohio's 2022 quarterback class has some interesting prospects in it, among the group to keep an eye on this fall is Springfield dual-threat standout Te'Sean Smoot.

The 6-foot, 175-pound signal caller is already picking up offers.

"I have six offers right now," said Smoot. "My biggest offer is probably UK, I like them a lot. I also have Toledo, Bowling Green, Akron, Kent State. I like Toledo a lot, too. I've been to a couple of games and camps at Toledo and that's another school that I like a lot right now."

In addition to his six offers, Smoot is drawing plenty of Big Ten interest and could start to see some real movement on that front once junior film starts being accumulated.

"Indiana, Northwestern, UC, those are some schools that I talk to a lot," he said. "I was going to go to their camps, they really want me to come down. Some of those schools felt like if I came to their camp that I would probably get an offer."

Ohio State is another Big Ten program that is in communication with Smoot and will be watching him this fall.

"I've been talking on the phone sometimes with Ohio State," he continued. "I've talked to coach Wilson, he's one of the main guys (from Ohio State). He has also come down here a few times and stopped by the weight room (during the open periods). He came to a showcase that we had during school."

Like many in his area, Smoot keeps a close eye on things in Columbus. The Buckeyes have had a strong run of quarterbacks lately and he has taken notice of that.

"I like Ohio State a lot," Smoot explained. "I like the tradition. They're winners. Their name is always in the conversation and they produce a lot of first round picks. They've had a lot of good quarterbacks come through and they have another one right now in Justin Fields, I really look up to him and hope to be in his position one day."

So crazy early and likely half wrong, let’s do it anyways.

RB: Gi’Bran Payne

Gi’Bran Payne recruitment heats up with narrowed list
Ohio State has put an emphasis on recruiting in-state talent since Ryan Day took over as the head coach, and the class of 2022 has some talented prospects in the Buckeyes backyard.

One of them is a young superstar running back, Cincinnati La Salle High School’s Gi’Bran Payne, who left the Buckeyes off his top 10 list he released over the weekend. Ohio State has yet to offer the rising junior back, but the Buckeyes have shown plenty of interest in him and remain a player in his recruitment despite the lack of an offer.

Payne’s top 10 included Alabama, Georgia Tech, Kentucky Louisville, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Wisconsin. But if the Buckeyes make an offer and continue to recruit the talented tailback, he might have to make room for the in-state national power in Columbus.

As I've said numerous times, Ohio State is going to have to continue recruiting its committed players as if they are uncommitted, and that will be no different with its three in-state 2022 commits as we stand about a year-and-a-half away from the early signing period for the 2022 class.

Just sayin': That's just the reality of recruiting......

Man, this is tough. I think Covid is going to greatly impact this class, and we’ll see a lot of Ohio guys.

Notes from 11W Forum...

1. 247 #3 DL Walter Nolen has top 2 of LSU and OSU acc. to Rivals. The LSU insider says they'll only take 1 DL next year which could leave OSU out front at this early juncture.

2.247 #5 DE Enai White's top 3 are OSU,Florida, and Oklahoma.

3.Same LSU Insider from above also says Denver Harris at the moment favors OSU over LSU.

I know this is ridiculously early for this stuff but still nice to see national recruits starting to recognize Ohio State as a force.

I think for the foreseeable future, you'll see top recruits include OSU in their mix of schools. They're witnessing not only the success of our players in the NFL, but in career outside of football. Play for OSU and whether you're a star or not, you have a great chance at success and it's not hinged on what you've done(or haven't done) on the football field

PAYNE LEARNING ALFORD’S STYLE, NOT STRESSING ABOUT OSU OFFER
Some of the questions that West Bloomfield (Mich.) 2022 prospect Dillon Tatum has asked Ohio State running back Tony Alford during their calls include the young Michigan standout asking him, “‘What type of things do you do differently than other colleges across the country?’”

“Because I’ve seen every year you have these running backs that go to the NFL, and they recruit all these great talents,” Tatum said. “And it’s like, ‘I wanna know, what do you do particularly for all these running backs compared to all these colleges?’

“He said, ‘I make them work harder, and they have that will to wanna play football and wanna play at The Ohio State University.’”

For Cincinnati La Salle running back Gi’Bran Payne, who is being recruited by the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn State but does not yet have an Ohio State offer, it’s been a pretty similar grilling to find out more about Alford during their conversations.

“The questions I ask are if my major’s available and stuff like that. Stuff with school first and then I’m asking questions about how he coaches and how if it’s different from other coaches I’ve talked to,” Payne, who plans on majoring in sports marketing or sports management, told Eleven Warriors on Saturday. “It’s just building a relationship. We talk about my film and stuff, and it’s getting stronger.

“Just that he does something different with every player. Some coaches will be doing the same things with each player, but each player can’t do the same thing. So you have to teach each player differently, and he has that. So he tells me how he does it. I’ve seen drills. We do chalk talk through the phone so he shows me some things through there.”

Cincinnati La Salle running back Gi'Bran Payne continues working toward an Ohio State offer..

Payne, who says he has been lifting and running frequently to stay in shape and has put on about five pounds of muscle in the offseason, released a top 10 on July 4 that included those five programs mentioned above but not Ohio State.

Payne is teammates with Ohio State commit Jaylen Johnson and former Buckeye commit Devonta Smith, who decommitted from Ohio State and committed to Alabama.

“They’re both in my head,” Payne said. “Tay actually just made a post that said you’re not leaving without me. Jaylen talks heavily about me to the Ohio State coaches so they know everything about me, really.”

More notes... 5star CB Domani Jackson (USC,scUM,and Clemson among top choices) is looking into re-classifying to '21 and might end up filling that suddenly available opening in the Clemson def. backfield. He would be rated at the top of '21 corners. Figures.
On the bright side, things look pretty good for both Texas WR Caleb Burton and Va. OL Zach Rice. Both players' parents really like Ohio State.

Ohio State quarterback prospect narrows list to two

If there’s one position on the football field, recruiting wise, that has been affected the most by the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s probably quarterback. The Buckeyes and new quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis needed the summer for in-person evaluations in the Class of 2022. That was important not just so Ohio State could evaluate young quarterbacks, but also so young quarterbacks and their families would have a chance to evaluate Dennis.

The inability for that to happen has contributed to the Buckeyes being removed from consideration by Raburn (Ga.) 2022 quarterback Gunner Stockton, who narrowed his list to two schools on Thursday morning: Georgia and South Carolina.

Stockton, the country’s No. 2-ranked quarterback, was very high on the list for Ohio State. But without any real chance to grow the relationship with him, the effort from the Buckeyes never really had a chance to get off the ground.

For Dennis and Ohio State, the focus now tightens even more on top-ranked quarterback Quinn Ewers, California prospect Maalik Murphy and a handful of still-being-evaluated talents around the country as the Buckeyes wait for a chance to see updated film.
