2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

O/U set at what? 2 1/2? for how many of those 8 OSU eventually lands?
High confidence in Bonsu, 50/50 on adding a DE, almost nothing on the OTs which means almost certainly a “no” right now for either.

After Bonsu, it seems like Keeley might be the best bet—especially if he takes an official (obviously).

Matayo’s dad is a likely barrier to him being in the class—his heavy involvement seems a little too much to be a culture fit, but who knows, Ohio State has had active dads recently like Gee Scott Sr. But there is positive heavy involvement and there is drama heavy involvement, and everyone can make their own judgement about where this one falls. It’s also just hard in general to recruit the west coast, particularly against a resurgent USC that’s willing to be aggressive with up front NIL offers.

Umeozulu is not a take right now, with LJ reportedly the only one pushing for him on the staff—and with LJ’s impending exit from the program (rumored semi retirement with a consulting role following the expanded coaching rules) his solo opinion seemingly isn’t going to sway anyone else on that status.

So it’s probably more like 1.5 right now with hopes that maybe they can get more involved with Okunlola if they feel like it.

IDK about some of those points.
Are you hearing some positive trends for Keeley towards OSU? Because I've been seeing ND fans worried most about Bama flipping him. But we all know to never rule out LJsr.

Star WR, Jordan Addison has gone on record bashing USC for NIL promises that haven't been delivered. You can bet that recruits are paying attention to that, because with all the rumors of their fruitful NIL deals, they still sit at #12 nationally. I'm still on the fence on what to think of Matayo's dad. I want to look at him as a dad being positive and controlling his son's narrative, but there's a fine line between being Gee Scott Jr. or a Jamie Newman. But you can't deny the kid's talent and not be excited with what LJsr can do with him in this defense.

Okunla will continue to be a pipedream until we get him on campus. Miami is in deep with that kid.
Same words can be said for Monroe Freeling...

This is logical, and even fair. But it seemingly only happens to Ohio State as far as the big time programs go. I never see this about any SEC program when they have coordinator changes.

Who do you include as big time programs?

You aren't going to see a major drop-off of defensive talent at a Georgia or Alabama when Kirby Smart and Nick Saban are the architects of the defense. LSU has had a recent fall off. Texas A&M was slipping a bit until NIL saved them. There have been fall offs of talent at UF and other middle to upper middling SEC teams.

I think OSU will be just fine....players without a doubt want to see what OSU looks like on the field with Knwoles.

I think it was also Birm who made the point that outside of the South, Ohio State is the only school that the southern fans care about, so the recruits grow up basically their entire lives hearing people talking trash about Ohio State, which is an initial hurdle that has to be overcome in almost every recruitment of southern players.

I imagine the extra scrutiny of coaching changes stems at least partially, to a lot, from the general skepticism and negativity focused on Ohio State across the board as a staple of southern sports culture.

Matayo Uiagalelei's brother is QB1 at Clemson. I just wonder why Matayo isn't a "lock" for them. Apparently Clemson isn't offering competitive NIL money. Matayo's father (i.e. "Big Dave") is on record as saying Matayo's recruitment will be a "business decision". And (with what is going on with NIL agreement these days) I guess you really can't fault him for that.

I don’t think that you can fault anyone for it, right? It’s similar (but not really) with the Gen Pop. Students have a series of options for school. Some will provide academic and or athletic aid… some won’t. A lot of students engage in a selection process whereby they strike a balance between the overall costs of the education v how that education will make them marketable on the backend… thereby paying back on their investment.

This is no different (but really it is). Having a rising HS senior we’re seeing it all over again as we saw with the first one out the door. There are schools that are buyers and others that are sellers. The sellers are in a position where getting in is highly competitive and as such, they don’t need to buy anyone if they don’t want to.

Either way, the families — in either situation — make decisions to optimize their situation. Zero harm… zero foul.

I could see OSU pursuing Toviano if they no longer have interest in DJ

https://247sports.com/Article/Javien-Toviano-top-schools-visits-commitment-recruiting-191104647/

Texas and Texas A&M are major contenders, but the 6-foot, 185-pound Toviano is very open to leaving the Lone Star State. Perhaps he even prefers it.

Toviano said he loves Ohio State as well and will soon put together his visit plans for the fall.

“I’ll be around the in-state games of course get out to Ohio State and Oregon to check out games, of course LSU,” Toviano explained. “I want to take it in, all the college football game day atmospheres I can.”

I was just going to speculate about this. I don’t think they have “no interest” in Dijon Johnson, but I believe they don’t want him “in” the class, deterring their pursuit of someone like Toviano, if there is even a little bit of a chance Johnson might flip later on, wasting potentially months of pursuit of Toviano.

Encourage Johnson to take his time and his visits while pursuing them both and see what happens.
