tOSU Ticket Prices (merged)

I've had student tickets for 6 straight years now, I have attended every single home game in that time, and I have never once been asked to show ID. It won't be a problem. If some gay-ass loser tries to ID you, just go to another gate.

vr,

The Ohio State University is a not-for-profit organizations... very different than a non-profit. (this is why they have funding arms that are non-profit, so folks will get the tax write offs). A not-for-profit organization is set up to not have profits, however if it does happen to be in the black, that is ok...

The Big Ten games are on one pass. They now use a bar code instead of the hole punch... My wife is in grad school and we got student tickets last year. For a couple of the games we had other commitments, and had to sell our tickets. The NCSU game we sold, no problem... the student ticket and reg. ticket are the same for ooc games. We also sold the NU game (which was on the Big Ten Pass). The guy we sold them to, had no problem getting in... in fact every game I went to last year, they did not check id's... my wife and I even went as far as to have her use my ticket, and me use her ticket.... guess what, they didn't check...

The Shoe sells out... that tells me ticket prices should be raised... simple supply and demand... You could prob. buy a season ticket, and sell it for double to triple what you paid (prob. even more this year with so many good home games)... we actually sold several of our tickets last year (we were given tickets from parents friends for most of the the games)... the lowest price I sold for was $100.00... and the student tickets cost us, what $24.00 or something like that... easy way to make a buck if you need to... (again the NCSU and NU games we were out of town, the other games we still got tickets and went)...

Also the Athletic Department is seperate from the university... they have their own debt to cover, and do not get a single penny from the university... NOT ONE PENNY... they cover their costs through football, basketball (both mens and ladies), and mens ice hockey... for the most part all the other sports opporate in the red... Sooo, what happens on the Oval has nothing to do with what is going on with the Athletic Department...

Just clearing some things up for ya :wink2:

I work one of the gates and I always check ID's. But we gatekeepers have a code that allows our friends to get in any gate they want. What you do is wear a gorilla custume with strap-on male genitalia and pink panties over the head. When you get to the gate keeper you slap yourself on the head repeatedly while sing I'm Henry the Eighth. That should get you in the gate just fine.

I'm going on 5 years of student tix and have yet to be ID'ed or see anybody get ID'ed.

If you really wanted to, you could buy the season ticket and sell it at the mich. game for a couple hundred. I know a lot of people did it two years ago (upwards of $300).

I'm going to assume that you missed my above post about the $350 million that OSU owes for the stadium renovation...

mili, gb - I won't claim to know the ins and outs of the University's budget. If they do still owe that money, then what facilitates them to finance and maintain the literally dozen or so different renovations that are taking place every single day? I would guess that the stadium will pay for itself through the revenue the football program generates. Again, just a guess. I really can't speak too intelligently on the subject, and I am admittedly immensely biased. As I said, a lot of it has to do with the fact that every single fee I pay goes up, every single quarter. Tuition is up, insurance is up, general undergrad fees are up. Traffic and Parking charges $25-30 for parking tickets, and hundreds of dollars for parking passes. Financial Aid overages (the money I receive after all the fees are paid, on which I rely entirely) have therefore shrunk. I can't say this enough - I am biased. As soon as I have that roll of paper clutched in my fist, I'll be out the door and far from caring about shit like this. So, ah...fuck it. :)

phatsacs - When I had a student ticket two seasons ago, they checked my ID at some games and not at others. I have definitely heard a couple stories about people being turned away who couldn't match an ID to the ticket. This was, however, pretty soon after September 11 of 2001, and there was no shortage of rumblings about heightened security at the games. This year, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you get turned away at one gate, try another. I imagine you'll be alright.

Yes it's gay they are not selling the ooc games to the students in advance, and moral of the story on student tickets is if the guys wearing a geasotpo uniform go on of the other 3 or so student gates. though, the real moral of the story is that title 9 is a bitch, and is ruinning college athletics as we love it, cuttin all the minor mens sports a la or national powerhosue gymnastic team and making a mockery of the womens ones, by pretty much having them leech everything of the football and mens bball

vr,

The university and the athletics department are on two totally different budgets...

All the work you see being done to education buildings/ the Oval/etc. is funded by the university/state of Ohio/ bond financing...

The Athletic Department, doesn't get any money from the university... they get their income from ticket sales/ concessions/ tv deals/ big ten rev. sharing/ maybe merchandise (don't know if they get a cut of it, or if that goes to the university).

There are only a couple of sports that opperate in the black... the vast majority don't self support, they opperate in the red... the shoe's renovation is financed over several years (somewhere around 25035 years)...

The Athletic department actually cuts checks to the university for tuition for their student athletes... the university doesn't pay for it, the Athletic department does...

Everybody looks at the income from the football program, and they fail to realize that is basically the brunt of income the AD gets to support ALL the sports programs at OSU, including paying the coaches/and folks in the Athletic Department... it is fully independant from the university...

I never really disagreed with any of that. Mili made the point that tOSU's being "strapped for cash" is not an impossibility, considering the debt owed for the stadium's renovation. As stated in my previous post, I'm sure that whatever such debts are owed will be paid by the revenues the football program generates over time, as you were kind enough to reiterate there. My complaints about student ticket prices, therefore, are more or less a separate issue from my financial dealings with the University. And, one more time, I am of the mind that I'm being overcharged for lots of things here at tOSU (the least of which would be football tickets, which I'm under no obligation to spend money on), and that is motivated entirely by the fact that I'm a cash-strapped student. My position is not particularly legitimate, and I definitely lack perspective on the subject. I hope this will make it clear at last that I really don't feel too strongly about any of this. It's aggravating to me that I don't have more money. End of story. I'll get over it, I'm sure. Thanks for setting me straight, though.

3yards,

sorry meant to say 25-30 years...

vr,

just making sure we are all on the same page, that the AD is a seperate entity... most all college students don't have money (paying the college expenses and working part-time jobs that don't allow for alot of extra cash), however you are investing in yourself, and that should pay huge dividends down the road...

I heard Geiger talk specifally about this a year or two ago. I never realized that the athletic department every year paid the university for the scholarships. He mentioned that the when the state cut back on educational spending, the increased cost of tuition cost the athletic department close to an additional $500K that year. I have no idea what they were paying, but that's a pretty sizeable increase.

What really gets me is when I hear people talk bad about ball players such as Clarett and Katzenmoyer and say they should have to pay the school back for their scholarship because they're taking money away from a student that could really use the money. No they're not. What they're actually is doing is making the university and athletic department money to support the women's water polo team.

vrbryant: Mili made the point that tOSU's being "strapped for cash" is not an impossibility,

I never insinuated that OSU was "strapped for cash", but only that they have very large expenses and that it most likely the reason for any increases in ticket prices. As pointed out above, since the athletic department actually pays the university for the education of its scholarship athletes, they thus have to cover any increases in tuition, fees, books, etc. When you have one of the largest (and most successful) college athletic programs in the country, your expenses are proportionately higher.

If I were a student, I'd rather pay $50 for a ticket to see a national-title caliber football team, than pay $25 to see a Northwestern or an Indiana.
