Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, B1G Championship Game, Sat 8 ET on FOX

At least we might have a "Pikey Reaction" (watch the movie "Snatch") from Urban or Ohio State Football after this loss.

Maybe new recruits, maybe new coaches, maybe he shaves his head and becomes Walter White. Who knows.

You realize he's around the same age as Heisenberg, right?

Has someone's Friends list gotten a little shorter?

3 and counting. Here's what I had to say:

I'll clear my friends list down to 3 people if necessary. Not going to listen to the blind hatred and 'S-E-C' chest-thumping from people who don't even have a team in a BCS bowl this year. If someone's team had something to gain from us losing, great. Yell! Scream! Say thanks for the loss! I would. I did so when Auburn lost. But if you have nothing to gain, it's pathetic. If you have a team in the top 5, go nuts! Otherwise, sit down and shut your face.

 :groove:

First let me give props to a great run by OSU. I really wanted you to play in the NC game and win. I was hoping that win would be the catalyst that raised the play for all big ten teams.

Second I am sorry you had to watch your team lose to a less talented team. It's been the norm for the last 12 years for me. Looking from the outside your DC seems to be the weak link.

I have no idea why Hyde did not get the ball more.

Really a great run, it's a shame they did not win any championships out of 24 straight wins.

O went dead for long spurts. Too many holes on D and it finally cost us.

The National press seems to be doing a celebration dance over the loss. Pat Forde basically wrote a personal hate column, 2 years in pandora's box and happily released last night. . Wow.

I'll just read which bowl Monday morning but not expecting much. The backlash towards this team seems very real. A shame.

Maybe the team should have worn the Alternate Uniforms yesterday for good luck?

I think maybe just running Carlos Hyde for an almost guaranteed first down on 3rd and short would have done the trick. Even if Sparty pulls out a miracle stop on 3rd, they aren't stopping him twice. I would bet any amount of money on it. It's the only thing that truly bothers me about this game. I just can't wrap my head around it. Baffled, honestly.

My problem is this; our defense has made every single quarterback/offense we've played look like Heisman contenders. Everyone has their best game of the season against us.

Just look at Cook and MSU. There's no way in hell we have less talent on Defense than Western Michigan, USF, Notre Dame, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan, Northwestern or Minnesota. Sadly, all of those teams held MSU to fewer than 34 points.

We made Joel Stave of Wiscy (20/34, 295 yrds (avg 8.7), 2 td/1 int) look like Tom Brady. But he averaged a 39.6 QBR against Penn State, the team playing with an FCS level of scholarships and asking students to walk-on. No way we should have less talent than they do.

The NWestern duo at QB completed 25/31 for 343 yards, at 11.1 a pop, with 2 TDs and 1 int against our D. They were held to <50%, less than 200 yards, no TDs and 1 int by Wisconsin. Against Nebraska, they had 81 total yards, no tds and 1 int. When was the last time Wisconsin or Nebraska had top 25 recruiting classes, let alone top 10/5 recruiting classes like we've averaged over the past 5 years.

There are many examples, but with the way we have recruited, on paper we have far and away more talent than any other team in the B1G on both sides of the ball. If there truly is a "talent" gap, it's because recruited talent hasn't translated onto the field. And in this scenario, there are two explanations:
1) Evaluation
2) Development

Both of which, again, lie on the coaches. What would happen if you gave our defensive players to Kirk Ferentz, Gary Andersen, Bill O'Brien or (gods forbid) Mark Dantonio? Personally, I think they would play a hell of a lot better than they did this season - which means it's on the coaches.

I really want the ability to like this post about 10 or 20 more times. So spot on. If it's game plan, it's on the coaches, if it's technique, it's on the coaches, if it's talent, it's STILL on the coaches, since it's their job to evaluate. If it was one or two players that were constantly under-performing, then I would say it's the players, and maybe the back up isn't ready yet, etc. That happens, that's all sports at all levels and you do your best as coaches to make a good unit despite the weakest links. But the whole back 7 has been terrible against the pass for three years running. That's an entire college playing career for most players. No one can possibly believe that Purdue and Minnesota have better defensive talent than Ohio State, even in a "bad" year of recruiting. For Christs sake, they can ALL be busts.

In any case, Sparty didn't "Sparty", we did. They are easily my 2nd favorite B1G team and wish them well in the Rose, they earned it the hard way, good on 'em.
