Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, B1G Championship Game, Sat 8 ET on FOX

Has the official 24-1.......MUST FIRE COACHES meme been created yet? The only thing crazier than Buckeye fans looking to fire coaches @ 24-1, is that their seems to be a valid argument for it. I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions. I heard Dinardo on BTN say the other day that these bowl practices were all about the younger guys getting work, as the guys getting most of the reps spent a little more time recovering. Are there going to be changes...immediately? How much will it change things?

After fixing my scarlet colored glasses this morning I've decided to blame this loss entirely on FOX. I know our defense is not the best in the country, but they did make some plays. Why it seemed to take seven minutes of commercials before our offense could try and capitalize on any of that momentum is terrible. I think it provided way too much time for thinking, and stymied the whole playing and reacting part of the game.

Interesting observation. Do you think they practiced like that. Urban: "OK let's run a few plays with the ones for two minutes, take a breather for seven, wait for the another minute while the talking heads dissect the last play, then go back out there and play hard" Seems like a recipe for stopping their focus and missing the opportunity to capitalize on the last "good play" (which were few and far between).

For the most part it's the coaches on the defensive side of the ball, which is hard to defend against. Yea we were 24-0, but not a whole lot of thanks to the defense save a few games. They have been pretty bad.

I think maybe just running Carlos Hyde for an almost guaranteed first down on 3rd and short would have done the trick. Even if Sparty pulls out a miracle stop on 3rd, they aren't stopping him twice. I would bet any amount of money on it. It's the only thing that truly bothers me about this game. I just can't wrap my head around it. Baffled, honestly.

I agree completely. Sitting near Spartan fans on Saturday night at LOS they were absolutely terrified of Carlos Hyde and were amazed how he was continuing to gash them even with their safeties creeping up. Taking the ball out of his hands was a monstrous mistake.

Interesting post game article about the infamous 4th down call that took all of our momentum away.

"It was my call," Meyer said. "I wanted to put the ball in the hands of the best player."

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/co...0131208/ohio-state-urban-meyer-big-ten-title/

Interesting. He was the one a few weeks ago that stated that the offensive staff needed to guard against getting "cute." Basically he said you have to dance with what brung ya and boy did they get away from that last night.

Almost like those guys that want to show how outside the box they think and they think themselves right out of the national championship game.

All that said, this is a blessing. FSU would mop the floor with this defense. It's out there now. We could all look around and say with Luke that "we won didn't we?!" We were whistling past the graveyard. This defense isn't even mediocre and it showed last night. Hell, it has shown multiple times over the last two seasons we were just playing shitty enough teams that it didn't matter.

Anything the pundits want to say about this team at this point is fair. They are the (second) best of a bad lot. Lots of changes need to happen in the off season starting with the defensive coaches. Not sure how James Laurenaitis can come in as a freshman and handle the scheme and Mike Mitchell, Trey Johnson and Vonn Bell can't.

I'll say this. A lot of our strengths as a team (running backs, D-Line, LB's like Shazier to a lesser extent) are coached by guys that were here in 2011. Our secondary has regressed incredibly since 2011. I watched the Wisconsin game from that season last night after the game and Roby, Barnett, etc were all shutting down their guys with the exception of the two drives at the end. This year Abbrederis took Roby to the woodshed and Stave looked 10X better than Russell Wilson did against us. I'll just say it, I want our Tresselball style back or at least our fundamentally sound defense. We had linebackers that were tough players despite not being the athletes we have now.

How did we not pound it with Hyde last night? Just when he (and Jordan Hall for that matter) got hot we abandoned them. We could have done a rotation of 2 carries for Hyde 1 for Hall repeat and probably gained 5 yards a play.

I know Fickell is not too popular, but Withers is the problem. I think Fickell is basically a figurehead and Withers is running the schemes, especially in the secondary where he and Kerry Coombs coach. I hope Withers gets a head job and I'd love to see Jim Heacock come back to the sideline with Fickell.

And where was Heuerman at? It was clear they couldn't cover him with a LB and their safeties were exactly 4 yards off the ball in the 4th quarter.

Wanted to wait to post this, not reactionary...we aren't that good. We hid our weaknesses against inferior opponents and lost to an actual opponent. Fire the defensive staff sans Vrable and there is always next year. Hate to say this, but I really don't give a shit about whatever bowl we end up in. Not the NCG or Rose, I don't care.

I'm just afraid that this team will feel the same way about what is most likely a great Clemson offense. Like you said Rb we were able to win inspite of our struggling defense now for the better part of two years. I too feel everyone should go outside of vrabel, and that includes Coombs.

What's troubling to me is that while I was upset last night in disbelief I'm not upset or really all that surprised. It's kind of like I knew we were on borrowed time with that defense we've been throwing out there for the last few years.

We have one more shot to prove our worth in the orange bowl against a good opponent and to set up next year with a strong memory of our beloved school. We need to take advantage of this game and what it brings to our program.

My turning point of last nights game was we were up 7 and just forced a punt. We picked up an easy Carlos Hyde first down to about mid field and on first down Braxton rolled to his left and had an easy 6-10 yards to run but instead he lobbed a touch pass to Philly that fell incomplete. After that we were forced to punt and they went and kicked a field goal and it feel apart from there. I feel if Braxton runs it there we stay on track with our ground game and go up 14 to take control. Such is life though and you have to credit msu for gutting it out.

If the defensive coordinator is a "figurehead", he's part of the problem.

That said, I don't think that' the case. I think some people are just going out of their way to shift criticism away from Fickell and onto Withers because Fickell is the incumbent, a former player and alumnus.

we're not how good? not good enough to play in the title game? probably not. we're still a really damn good football team.

I think the Sparty defense should have been flagged for too many men on the field on several occasions. Once in particular when Braxton scrambled around the right side and ended up coming back to the left. I swear he passed 6 MSU guys to get around the corner and then there were 6 more guys waiting on him after that. That's 12...too many. That DC needs to get the hell out of East Lansing.

Another play that I have stuck in my head is about our defense. MSU got a pass out to their right side(towards our sideline) I kept waiting to see someone come from behind and tackle him. Now for some reason I'm thinking that play went for 20+ yards, but instead of seeing him get caught from behind, Shazier came in from from the opposite direction. I'm not sure why, it just seemed wrong to me.

Maybe I just don't want to think about those 3rd and 4th down plays anymore....:sad3:
