Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, B1G Championship Game, Sat 8 ET on FOX

we're not how good? not good enough to play in the title game? probably not. we're still a really damn good football team.

Compared to what? Relative to the top 20, I guess we're somewhere in there. Relative to what we do at osu, not satisfactory. Its Rose Bowl/NCG or bust here. Not trying to be a self entitled fan because this was a good season, but I'm not going to pretend this team is somehow up to standard. If the defense was even adequate, it would be a different story.

I think people are shifting criticism to Withers because people are ignoring him totally and he's the safeties coach. Fickell's position is performing much better than Coombs (CB) or Withers (S). Fickell's 2011 D was much better than this. We only gave up >34 more than once and that was Michigan. Had we had any offensive consistency that year we would have likely been an 8-10 win team...

Fickell's name belongs in that discussion with the ones you mentioned. His position group has been subpar as well. Ryan Shazier had a great individual season but as a unit they are ineffective blitzers, without a clue against misdirection and just as ineffective in coverage as the secondary.

Fickell's defense in 2011 was better because it was Jim Heacock's defense.

My thoughts about each offensive positions...

O-Line - Did a decent job.
WR - Way to NOT show up minus one good play by Brown. Way too many dropped balls that were catch-able. We need more "taller" play-makers" at WR, much like FSU has.
RB - What more can you say about Hyde? He should of had at least 10 more carries and I believe the outcome of the game would have been different.
QB - Miller played decent. Got very little help from his WR's. He did throw a few bad passes and made a few bad decisions running the ball.
TE - Should of had more balls thrown their way. Negatives=Hauerman got schooled blocking on that 4th down play.

My other P's would be why didn't Wilson even get one snap on offense? The MSU D knew 2 people was getting the ball "Miller or Hyde". Knowing the OSU WR unit was inept in this game.
I just can't fathom why Wilson wasn't utilized more. He would have took more attention off Hyde and Miller and even the WR's. The game plan was a failure from start to finish. The only reason we were even in the game was due to Miller's athleticism and Hyde's greatness.

Defense...

D-Line - Got pressure but MSU countered very nicely with the dump offs.
LB's - Good job at covering the gaps most of the game to stop the MSU run game. Negatives= The usual piss poor coverage in the secondary
CB's/S - Typical game by our secondary. Proved yet again why they were the weakest link of the chain on defense. The stats don't lie.. you aren't ranked 100th in the nation against the pass for a reason.

I just can't remember an OSU D having so many secondary breakdowns in a game and throughout the year as this team had.

The question now is it the players or coaching?

Ok, after having a day to chill out and think about the game, I have had some observations. The most simple is that we knew our pass defense was at best suspect, at worst just bad at times. I had some concerns after our struggles with scum and was hoping we could do some adjustments, but while we adjusted at the half, so did Sparty. It's weird, I have not felt this feeling in a while, losing, it sucks, but everyone can identify the problem and begin to address it.

Another thing was I was a bit confused with some of the play calling, I figured we would just ram it down their throats over and over again until we broke them, but that really didn't happen. I guess getting ourselves into a hole early forced some adjustments that weren't to our strength.

Either way, hats off to MSU, they had a great season and should represent the B1G well in the Rose Bowl.

And for everyone who seems to have gotten this idea that we are a bad football team or that we would get mangled by FSU, step away from the ledge. The bucks are still a damned good football team and now it's time to start a new streak, hopefully one ending in a crystal football :)

Yeah out of the approximately 100+ D1 teams but that is not the standard here. Our offense is very good, our special teams is questionable, and our defense is absolutely horrendous. It really isn't a stretch to question if this is a top 10 team in the country...we masked our vulnerabilities for awhile but a good MSU team exposed them. Inferior teams damn near did too but the first worthy opponent on soil that was not our own in the last two years put this team into perspective. A good but not great team.

Looking at other teams in the Top-10... I think we definitely belong.
Most teams at this level have major flaws. If Herman fixes the play-calling, I think we can play anyone.
This team has never been in danger of being blown out 26+ points (Baylor and Oregon), or losing to the equivalent of Illinois / Indiana / Purdue (Stanford and SC), or beat by multiple scores by the equivalent of an Iowa or PSU (Auburn and Oregon)

That right there makes you a self-entitled fan. No program in college football history wins its conference and goes to a top-tier bowl every year. Whether you like it or not, this program will have years where it's not the best, and that doesn't make the season a "bust". Should we beat a solid top-12 team in a BCS bowl and finish 13-1 and very likely in the top 5, I fail to see how that is a "bust".
