Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, Sat 11/21, 3:30pm ET, ABC

He better not be punished for speaking his mind either.... as time passes and more people point out more damning stats it's becoming even more of a joke what they did to zeke.

well what the fuck are they going to do, take away one his his 3 carries after the first quarter next week?

Here's some of those "damning stats" you are referring to:

The Buckeyes gained just 132 yards in their loss to the Spartans, and ran only 45 plays, both the lowest totals of the Urban Meyer era.

JT Barrett......15 carries for 44 yards (2.9 yard average)

Ezekiel Elliot.....12 carries for 33 yards (2.8 yard average)

Braxton Miller....2 caries for 9 yards (4.5 yard average)

If some of Barrett's carries were "zone read options"; potentially Zeke might have had a few more carries. Regardless whatever they were calling it wasn't working and they should have tried something else (you will notice that my hindsight is 20/20 here).

Tongue in cheek comment: I can look at Ohio State's depth chart for running backs and name several players who would be totally elated to get 3 carries per quarter.

J.T. Barrett said MSU was taking the deep balls away because they were playing off. If that's all it takes, UM should take note.

duh.. then throw underneath

How many balls were thrown deep?

Know who else played off of them?

This same team consistently left Westerkamp with double coverage. He consistently beat double coverage all night long.

IMO, there's 0 excuses for why we didn't throw the ball.

If they were taking away the deep ball, then you nickel and dime them down the freaking field. It happens to us all the time. Short routes getting 5-15 yards.

We didn't even try those.

Then when teams start committing to the short stuff, you open it up a bit more

No instead, we ran Barret almost every down for a whopping what, 60 total yards the 2nd half?

Now, that being said, I took a look at some of the highlights from you guys' game.

Dantonio told his D coordinator not to even play pass on D. He said, STOP THE RUN.

And it was simple.

Here's example 1:

PlayingOff4.jpg

The play call was an inside screen to Marshall. He ran about 12 yards for a first. I'm okay with this call, but they were double covering receivers all night long.

Big problem I keep hearing is "they took it away." Well, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Run a play to exploit the look they're giving. Better yet, quit being so fucking passive, attack them and make them react. It seems too much this season they're letting other teams dictate what they do rather than the other way around.

Glad you said that, Jib....

Next play I noticed (note the yards per carry I circled):

PlayingOff6.jpg

And note the coverages. Yeah, they were playing off a lot. How do you fix that? How about running receiver screens? That's a staple of the Urban Meyer offense....

What did they run on this play? They roll JT (a right handed thrower) to his LEFT. He starts to roll to his left, and gets sacked on the play.

IT'S BASICALLY A ONE MAN ROUTE...
The other two receivers are basically out of the play.

Staple of the Beck-O...

I think its safe to say that Tom Herman was last years MVP. The offensive game planning this year has been awful, and you just knew when they finally played a good defense it could get ugly. Even then, I did not expect it to be even remotely that ugly.

To be fair, they rolled him to his left as an adjustment to RT Chase Farris getting destroyed the previous week by Illinois.

Would probably also help to explain why we didn't see much in the was of passes to the TE or Elliott. I don't recall specifically, but I bet they were asked to stay in and help Farris on the few pass plays that were attempted.
