tOSU vs. USC in recruiting (split from Ashley thread)

Taosman said:
I give USC all the credit in the world for the great job of awakening a sleeping giant! The real question for USC is how come it took so long? They are "hot" right now and can just about get anyone they want. Just like Miami, recently!

We, have to find our kind of kids! I'm not sure how to define this. The coaches Know who they want better that any of us fans!

They are the hottest of teams right now and probaly will be for a few more years. Two things will happen to end there hot streak though. First #1 guy Petie Carrol may leave for an NFL job. If this doesn't happen first, then Pete Carrol's role of friend AND coach will take it's toll on the team intangibles. Right now Pete's got those players that have seen loses thinking positively and believing in his system. After a while though Pete the Friend and Coach will not be taken seriously and the team intangibles they have now will fade. I've learned over the years whether you are a parent or a coach, you can't be a kids friend. In the future players won't take Petie the friend seriously or Petie the coach for that matter. Just my opinion. If you doubt my characterization of Petie, read up on his NFL days. The knock on him then was he was the players friend and coach, thus he wasn't fully respected as a coach. I doubt Petie is much different now, people don't change.

I just don't understand all the focus on who OSU DIDN't get.

OSU got Ginn, Hiley (when he was here), Whitner, Boone, Bemoll, Denlinger, Lyons, Mitchum, Schoenhoft, etc.

The list goes on and on. You don't see posts over on the USC board constantly lamenting the fact that Maurice Wells is no longer looking at USC.

There isn't anything over there saying "Man, Ginn is really the one that got away! How come Carroll couldn't close that deal?"

OSU has had a top 10, top 5, and top 2 class in three of the last 4 years that Coach Tressel has been here (the top 5 is this year. I don't see how it cannot be top 5 when all is said and done).

What's up? These types of threads just smack of an inferiority complex that fans of OSU simply should not have.

Let's breakdown the guys we have gone head to head for the last two years
Last Year
Fred Davis-USC kicked our ass on this one. Outrecruited Tressel pure and simple. It happens.

Dwayne Jarrett-same as Davis. Carroll worked some crazy mojo and flat out beat Tressel.

Teddy Ginn-homecourt advantage saved our ass on this one. From everything I have heard from knowledgeable sources, Buckeye fans should thank their lucky stars for Coach Ginn and Mama Ginn. Not as much of a slam dunk for the Buckeyes as everyone would think. Who cares-he is a Buckeye.

USC 2 OSU 1 - Carroll would get extra credit if this was not a zero sum game, he did steal a top dog from Tressel's backyard

This Year
Walker Ashley-In head to head competition Tressel kicks Petey's ass. Even if he signs elsewhere (hope not), Ashley said he preferred the Buckeyes to the condoms

Jason Gwaltney-I think he signs w/ USC. They actually need RBs almost as much as OSU does. Maybe he is a Buckeye, but I doubt it.

Mo Wells-I think USC was always behind with this one. The home court advantage-his mom's whole family living in Columbus-gave the Buckeyes a huge edge. I think we are in good shape.

OSU 2 USC 1-If things go down the way they appear-Ashley and Wells to the Bucks, Gwaltney to the Trojans-Petey and Jim are tied. That said, for 3 of the recruits, Tressel had the homecourt advantage-kinda like USC recruiting an LA kid-and had to fight like the dickens for them.

Did we really get out recruited for Burgess and Crable or did the fact that moC and Burgess had issues while in high school and he and crable are related take us out of the running.

After that we probably had no chance and where is the logical place for a stud from Ohio to go if not to OSU?

Crable just seems to be a free spirit, who wanted to be contrary-he had a cousin Steve Luke-who played for the Buckeyes and was working him really hard for Tressel. Burgess, on the other hand, wanted no part of a team w/ MoC on it.
