Michael Brewer transferring to Hokies

Virginia Tech will have another option in replacing quarterback Logan Thomas.

Former Texas Tech quarterback Michael Brewer announced Sunday that he's transferring to play for the Hokies. Because he'll graduate this spring, Brewer will be eligible immediately with two seasons left to play.

Brewer was projected to start for the Red Raiders last season but a summer back injury kept him from the playing the first month of the season. When he finally returned from the injury, freshmen Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield had solidified their places on the depth chart ahead of him.

Brewer originally had sought a transfer to TCU or Texas, but Texas Tech denied him a release to transfer within the Big 12.

He will join a wide-open competition at Virginia Tech to replace Thomas. The Hokies have several quarterbacks on scholarship, including fifth-year senior Mark Leal, though none with much experience.

Got my tickets to take my son Henry, age 12 as a reward for straight A's to finish out the school year. Really glad he did this for me....and himself!!

Question: I have only been to one game in the Shoe, vs. Miami a few years ago. This will be his first visit. He loves tOSU like me but neither of us has even seen campus or the restaurant/pub areas of Columbus that need to be seen (college vibe) so I need some advice how to spend my Saturday. Consideration should be given to:

1.) Seeing the campus (we travel a bunch and I like to expose my son to lots of college campuses)
2.) Pregame Skull Session and/or Quick Cals, I assume they don't conflict...QC is just before kick off?
3.) Experience tailgating some (but we don't know anyone to hook up with, when or where)
4.) Watching some of the other good games that day: USC vs. Stanford 3:30pm, Sparty vs. Oregon 6:30pm (won't be able to watch very much of this one)...thinking I might hook up with a tailgate crew with a good TV ?!?

So, for my fellow Buckeye Planet friends please give me a perfect itinerary for the day. The list above is in order of priority. Also, keep in mind my son is 12 but he has been exposed to a bunch of stuff already in his youth....road trips to OSU-Iowa, OSU-NW and everything from the gritty parts of San Francisco, Boston, etc. He won't be shocked by much but I still shield him from stupid debauchery. We are staying with family, can't remember the neighborhood but I was told last time I stayed with them that it was the same neighborhood Tress lived in? I can't confirm that though. I would sure like to hear some advice on how to spend my day....oh, one last bit...I will arrive Friday around mid day and leave Sunday morning so I could do some stuff Friday after I arrive. THANK YOU!!!!

1.) Take him to Ohio Union, the Oval, Mirror Lake, Buckeye Grove
2.) They will not conflict. Skull Session is 2 hours before kickoff, QC happens right before the team goes into the locker room after warm ups.
3.) Usually people will be friendly to tailgating, but there's corporate versions of tailgating if you can't find someone (whatever Hineygate is now)
4.) You could go to BW3s on Lane and High to watch other games, but I'd also assume it will be crowded.

Jim Tressel lived in Upper Arlington (same place where I live) Lots of stuff to do around Lane Ave. You're from Missouri, so one thing you have to do on Friday night since you're in UA is either head down Lane Ave. to Graeter's or down to Grandview for Jeni's and get some of the best ice cream in the country. (warning Jeni's is more eclectic in its flavors as well as more expensive)

Carsonie's (Lane Ave.) is a good Italian joint, Rotolos (5th Ave.) makes some good pizza. Da Vinci's is a good little Italian food shop (used to be a full blown restaurant but they downscaled their operations after a death in the family), this may sound weird but the Giant Eagle Marketplace (local grocery store converted into a mega grocery store) has live shows in their dining area you may want to check out. Beer selection is quite good as well.

As I think of more, I'll post it, but this is some stuff local to where you'll be that you can do.

If you have time, you should also check out the Columbus zoo but that will require some planning/travel time as it's quite a distance from UA. Rated one of the best zoos in the country.
