Yeah, well it was a lot of talent to lose somewhat unexpectedly at once at UM. He was going to bring UM back again eventually, but when your choices are 2 rebuilding jobs, why not get paid a lot more doing it? He is going to get a good job in college even if he fails in the NBA. Beilein is a climber who has coached at seemingly every level of basketball, it is what he has always done. Also, he coached Mike Gansey at WVU, and I have seen some reports that Gansey is in the Cavs FO and helped convince Beilein to take the job.

This is such a gut punch to the skunkbears. One of the things I keep hearing from my TSUN "acquaintances" is that they are now a basketball school. Whatever comfort that gave them, although obviously false, is now about to go into the shitter. Next it will be: "We don't really care about sports. We are above that. We are first and foremost an academic institution."

The question is, how many years does he think he gets to succeed with the Cavs before he would get fired? The answer to that question is probably how long he was going to coach scUM before retiring, anyway. It seems to me that he is clearly at the very end of his career so he said “why the hell not? I’m only coaching a few more years and both situations are the same.”

I can’t imagine he’d leave a cushy job (with way more cushion/leeway) he planned on keeping for 5-10 more years for a job where he could be fired in 2-3 unless that’s all the longer he’s wanting to coach.

I'm shocked so I can't even imagine how the scUM fans feel, ha.

Pretty much the only realistic ways I can think of that scUM might be able to positively out-splash the negative splash of losing Beilein would be if they can get Donovan or Beard.

It would be a heck of a lot cheaper just to promote Yaklich, though, and maintain their defense.
