Previous PR disasters made me think Gene was somewhat incompetent, but the Zach Smith fiasco blowing up the way it did proved that the PR fuckery extended all the way to the top. As far as his coaching hires go, he's been pretty damn great.

I've heard some scUM fans think McDaniels will flip once Howard is in place at scUM but, man, that would be really poor taste on McDaniels' part to commit to Washington while knowing that his cousin is the top candidate for the scUM job if he has any sort of intention on reneging. Plus, like, it's May. I imagine his commitment comes with an LOI to UW not far behind.

Yeah, not buying it.

Why announce to the hometown team when your cousin appears to be days away from being named the HC at another school? I mean, it's recruiting, so crazy shit happens all the time, but this just doesn't pass the sniff test. If he was even considering scUM (with Juwanna), why announce at all? I could see it if scUM had been in the mix all along, but it appears they were never even a consideration in the first place.

Funnier still; I have never heard them so much as mention the name Glen Rice in any context at all ..... and that motherfucker actually lead them to a title.

Let's look at the history of former NBA players hired as college coaches. Fred Hoiberg was a hit, and Penny Hardaway seems to be off to a great start, but most of the other guys that I know of were misses to an extent, or the jury is still out. Patrick Ewing is doing OK so far, but it is still really early in his tenure. Dan Majerle seems to be doing pretty well. But there has been a lot of losing from others including Chris Mullin, Kevin Ollie, Isiah Thomas, Clyde Drexler, Reggie Theus, Mark Price, Mike Dunleavy Sr, Danny Manning, Avery Johnson, Terry Porter, Donyell Marshall, and Damon Stoudamire. A lot of miserable failures on that list, a lot more failures than successes.

Funny, Stadium's Jeff Goodman just posted a story about Howard and rehashed a lot of the same coaches that I listed there.

Edit: one interesting note is that Hoiberg, the man whose success stands out above the crowd, has eschewed the normal high school recruiting process in favor of a heavy transfer-oriented recruiting strategy. Remembering Chris Jent's disdain for recruiting is further evidence that many of these former NBA guys and/or their staffs don't do a very good job with the high school scouting and recruiting grind.
