For those who don't recognize Piedmont, CA, it sits in the hills above and just west of Oakland.

As for Holywood bad asses:
Garry Wills is not so sympathetic in his book John Wayne’s America, which served as the basis for TruthDig's scathing indictment.

“He was, in reality, a draft dodger. America’s archetypal soldier was in fact a chicken hawk. He was a cheerleader and champion of militaristic patriotism and combat he had never experienced. Wayne had ‘other priorities’ during WWII—achieving superstardom (and saving his neck) was more important than defeating fascism. Much like Vice President Dick Cheney, who sought numerous deferments during the Vietnam War, Wayne was the quintessential war wimp.”

Thank you! John Wayne was the original chickenhawk, and if people hadn't intervened that night at Chasen's Sinatra absolutely would have thumped that ass!

not so sure about eastwood's "badass background." he's always portrayed himself as a gritty, rough-edged everyman who has been through the hard knocks of life. meanwhile, eastwood grew up in an uber-wealthy part of piedmont, california, literally called "the city of millionaires" because the town had the most millionaires per square mile in whole united states. he then went on to serve in the korean war as a lifeguard for the army in northern california. i wouldn't be surprised if his parents' connections helped him land that cushy gig far away from combat. i like a lot of his movies, but the guy's an actor in every sense of the word.

I grew up minutes from Piedmont. For some more context, California recently enforced preventative power blackouts. A lot of PG&E (CA gas company) CEO's live in Piedmont. You better believe houses in Piedmont did not have their power shut off.
