Game Thread Tulane @ Ohio State - 09/22/18, 3:30PM (BTN)

Just looking up some stats for the game and see that Tulane is 109th in total defense (465ypg), and 101st in passing defense (265ypg). They've played Wake Forest, Nicholls State, and UAB. Damn that's one bad defense. I think they might actually be worse than Oregon State's D based on who they've both played.

Normally I'd be a bit concerned with their sandwiched between 2 season defining games, but there's no reason OSU shouldn't score on their first 5 or 6 possessions and then grind down the clock. Plus UFM is back, which means everyone on the team should be roaring to go.

even if they did come out flat, they'd still probably win this one pretty easily. If i'm concerned about anything it's the defense giving up some gash plays and cheap points (like Oregon State) Would be kinda shocked if we score under 50 points here.

B1G Things to Know – Tulane at Ohio State

Tulane.jpg

“B1G Things to Know” is your weekly gathering of the 10 most important things you’ll want to know about this week’s Ohio State game. These 10 facts will help you be the most knowledgeable fan at your Game Day activity, no matter where you gather across Buckeye Nation to cheer on the Men of the Scarlet & Gray.

This Saturday, a Green Wave hits Ohio Stadium, as the Buckeyes take on Tulane. The matchup is the first meeting between the two schools and Tulane is the only “Group of Five” opponent Ohio State is scheduled to play in 2018.

Tulane University is a private, nonsectarian university located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The school was founded as a public medical college in 1834, and became a comprehensive university in 1847. Current undergraduate enrollment is 8,435. Tulane began playing football in 1893, and has a historical record of 496-620-35.

Now, here are the Big Ten Things To Know:
  1. Tulane is one of thirteen ‘Founding Members” of the SEC, and was a member of the conference from inception in 1932 through 1966.
  2. Head Coach Willie Fritz is in his third season at Tulane, and 26th overall. Fritz is 10-17 at Tulane and 203-91-1 overall.
  3. Since 2016, Tulane’s rushing attack has never gained fewer than 100 yards on the ground.
  4. The phenomenon of awarding players who come away with a turnover got a little “New Orleans flair” this year as the Green Wave introduced the nation to the Takeaway Beads.
  5. Tulane Senior wide receiver Terren Encalade enters the matchup with Ohio State with 10 career 100-yard receiving games. His next 100-yard receiving effort would push him into the top five all-time at Tulane.

PREVIEW: TULANE AT NO. 4 OHIO STATE

96726_h.jpg

Unless you’ve been paying really close attention this week, it’s been easy to miss who the Ohio State football team is playing on Saturday.

There’s a reason for that. Tulane is just 1-2 to start the season, with losses to Wake Forest and UAB and its only win against Nicholls State, a Football Championship Subdivision team. The Green Wave aren’t expected to pose any real threat to the Buckeyes on Saturday, and it doesn’t help that one of Ohio State’s most anticipated games of the season – its Sept. 29 primetime clash at Penn State – looms just one more weekend away.

The big reason why Tulane has been overshadowed, though, is that the big storyline going into Saturday’s game has nothing to do who Ohio State is playing.

It has everything to do with who will be back at Ohio Stadium.
After serving a three-game suspension to start the season, Urban Meyer will be back on Ohio State’s sideline Saturday as the Buckeyes play their fourth game of the year.

When the university announced its suspension of Meyer on Aug. 22, with the reasoning that he “failed to take sufficient management action” relating to misconduct by former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, some wondered whether that would leave a sour taste in Meyer’s mouth, and if it would ultimately be the beginning of the end of his time at Ohio State.

As he prepared for his return to the Shoe this week, however, Meyer made it clear that having the opportunity to coach the Buckeyes means as much to him now as it ever has before.

“My love for this university is unwavering and so real,” Meyer said on his radio show Thursday. “My love for the fans is unwavering and so real. I’ve been a Buckeye since as far back as I can stand, and I’ll forever love to be on that sideline.

“Between the third and the fourth quarter, when The Best Band in the Land plays Hang on Sloopy, that’s that moment that I always stare down there and just say, ‘I’m very grateful to be a part of it.’”

BUCKEYE BREAKDOWN
Even though Meyer wasn’t on the sidelines for the first three games, Ohio State didn’t miss a beat. The Buckeyes enter this week’s game with a 3-0 record after earning their biggest win of the season with a 40-28 victory over TCU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas last weekend.

While Meyer was able to coach the team in practice for the past two weeks – he just wasn’t able to be at the games – he expressed gratitude to his coaching staff, players and Ohio State fans for leading the way to a strong start.

“There’s three groups of people that are to be appreciated,” Meyer said Thursday. “No. 1, our coaching staff. Ryan Day, I knew when we hired him, he was elite, and his record shows for himself, 3-0. And he had Greg Schiano, Kevin Wilson, Alex Grinch, (Greg) Stud(rawa), (Tony) Alford, everybody, Coach (Bill) Davis, did such a phenomenal job.

“Obviously the most importantly group, the players,” Meyer continued. “And the leadership, the character and the brotherhood. And then finally, Buckeye Nation.”

3 Things To Watch For From Tulane

Tulane-Football.jpg

The Tulane Green Wave will make their first trip into Ohio Stadium on Saturday as a decided underdog (Ohio State -37).

The Buckeyes will welcome head coach Urban Meyer back to the sidelines for the first time this 2018 season. While Ohio State will be without the services of star defensive end Nick Bosa for the foreseeable future, the Buckeyes will look to earn their fourth-straight victory in this 2018 season.

Tulane is 1-2 on the year, but both of its losses were close affairs. Tulane lost in week one in overtime at home to Wake Forest (23-17), and in the final minutes at UAB (31-24). This is a team that believes that they should be 3-0.

Here are three things to keep an eye out for as Tulane will try to prove all of the Las Vegas oddsmakers wrong.

Corey Dauphine As The Primary Tulane Rushing Weapon

A 6’0″, 200 pound junior running back, Dauphine has 236 yards on the ground, averaging 12.4 yards a carry. Those inflated statistics are due primarily to Dauphine’s stellar game in week two against Nicholls State. He had three touchdowns to go with his six carries for 152 yards, a 25.3 yard per carry average.

Dauphine does not have any career receptions with the Green Wave.

Tulane Play-Action Passing

The top two wide receivers for Tulane are Darnell Mooney and Terren Encalade, and both average over 17 yards a reception.

While Tulane quarterback Jonathan Banks is only completing 48% of his passes, it might be a strategy of Tulane’s to try and attack the Buckeye secondary on play-action passes.

I just learned that Urban's been suspended for the first 3 games but he'll be back this week.

Fuckin' media never tells us these things.
I was listening to a podcast that was talking to some fuck from ESPN and he said he'd be in Columbus soon. And I figured.....for the PSU game, right? Then I realized. Nope, for more Zach Smith/Urban stupidity.

Same thing happened last weekend. My brother said something about Urban doing an interview on ESPN and I figured it was football related for a split second. Then I realized.

Tulane just lost to UAB this week.

They struggle to throw the ball. QB is 37/77 on the season (48%)

109th currently in Total Defense after playing Wake Forest, Nicholls & UAB

Should be a slaughter.

Also, after that murderer's row of a schedule, they are 120th in the nation in 3rd down defense.

Ohio State is #3 in 3rd down offense, after what has arguably been a tougher schedule than anyone else in the top 5.

Drue Chrisman won't be giving scouts much to evaluate this week. As the holder for extra points, at least he'll get on the field.

I don't think there will be a whole lot of third downs in the first place...
