Turf vs Grass (Official Thread)

i've only ever played one football game on turf. and it was the old green outdoor carpet from Home Depot style back in the day.
i've played softball on field turf.

not a huge fan of either.

my son is playing freshmen football this season.
he's going to play ONE game on natural grass. just one.
every other game is on field turf.

all of the public high schools in this parish and the one to our east have turf fields.
1 of the two big catholic schools has it as well.

so his only game on grass will be the road game at the catholic high school from which i graduated.

Considering your location, I’d have to guess that the drainage in these fields is a big plus tho, no? Even up here it’s huge in spring season. We’d have to cancel a lot of practices for fear of ripping up the grass. Field turf? No probs.

we have 4 public High Schools in this parish

Two on the West Side share one stadium
Two on the East Side share another stadium.

that’s two schools that each have:
Freshman Football
JV Football
Varsity Football

also, due to very few other fields available, several additional middle/jr high games are also played at those stadiums.
as well as rec leagues on Saturdays.

so yeah these fields take an absolute beating.

last year was really bad thanks to a very wet season. tore up both fields to being unusable by end of the season.

one of the High Schools has to “host” a playoff game on somebody else’s field in the neighboring parish.
