If anyone questions whether or not Twitter is useful, the events over the past week or so have really proven how valuable it can be.

Immediate access to breaking news and (some) intelligent comments on it from people all over the place. There were videos within minutes of the tornados in Alabama, updates on where it was heading, comments from people actually in the situation, etc.

It was also fun being on Twitter last night when the Bin Laden news broke. Seeing the reactions from campuses around the country was awesome. Seeing Mirror Lake trending and people talking about it ALL OVER THE WORLD was awesome.

tl;dr - I'm glad I signed up for Twitter.

That's how I picked up on it. I was watching Anthony Bourdain re-runs on the DVR when I glanced at my laptop and noticed there were an assload of new tweets - much higher than normal for that late on a Sunday evening.

I think the participatory aspects for breaking and ongoing situations is vastly overstated, and there's a lot of bullshit and noise out there. However, if you have a well-curated list of accounts to follow it can be a valuable tool for discovering and consuming news.
