We're always evaluating ourselves too...

This is the key take-away point here. We discuss the 'Twitter issue' with some regularity. There's a lot of good info to be taken away from there. At the same time, Twitter also represents the worst of the internet -- random assholes taking potshots at athletes and other people because it's quick, easy, and they're less likely to get popped in the face than someone who says something similarly nasty and abusive to a player in a restaurant bathroom (true story; the incident, not the punch). Some of the stuff said to Sullinger (for example) during the basketball season was completely outrageous, and those attacks provoked even worse in response from loyal and offended fans. To his credit, JS himself always handled it with an impressive amount of class, patience, and tact.

BP has its own Twitter account (@buckeyeplanet) and we have indeed retweeted things from the accounts of players and assistant coaches. In fact, I'd like to see our Twitter account become much more active. So it's really a question of how to bridge the good to the BP forums without bringing in (and/or being a launching point for) the bad.

Our current policy is by no means a rejection of Twitter, nor is it meant to handcuff anyone here (quite the opposite, actually). We just have to find a good way to handle it. We're also sort of waiting and watching to see how the school and the NCAA catch up (they're way behind, and that complicates things for us) and get a better handle on it.

One of my biggest focuses right now with BP is to find ways to better tie it in to the more social aspects of the internet as it's currently used. Actually, that's been a focus for a long time, we just take a more cautious and deliberate approach to making changes than the chaotic and sometimes sort of cavalier approach I employed 3-5 years ago.

Where and as people have reasonable and considered suggestions as to how and where we can update our policies (as it speaks to Twitter or anything else) we should *absolutely* be having those conversations (as we are in this thread). That's how things change, and many perspectives and ideas make for easier and better conclusions/action.

So the gist of why we don't post twitter on here is that moderators/administrators believe it would require more moderation? If so I finally understand.

After reading someone else's posts I realized this came off a lot worse than I intended.

Funny how a short sentence can sometimes come off as unintended.

(Luckily that first one was 151 characters so you might have had to re-think it...or use shorthand. :p)

This is a pretty good example of why we don't do player tweets on here:

http://twitter.com/#!/ZackMeisel

Meisel is the reporter of the Lantern expose, and his twitter is dominated by retweeting people who think he's awesome (after a post saying he's not out for self promotion) and retweeting personal attacks on him. Even as a media member, the situation gets out of control quickly.

Of course, some of that is earned when you claim Ray Small has no axe to grind nor any reason to lie. Perhaps he wasn't on campus with Ray, but with one player interview it would be clear why those are dangerous and flawed assumptions to make.

 I may get into tweeting more this fall with galleries and other small anecdotes (which would work well when I see or hear something on the sideline but it doesn't deserve its own thread), but my wife will leave me if I ever tweet about sandwich consumption.

I told a girl to shut up earlier on Twitter, if she has a problem you should do the same. On Twitter.

Several things have changed since that rule was put in place. More news (and "news") services are using it for communication. The excitement over knowing what players are doing has kind of settled down, and people are less likely to come flying in claiming "insider" status based on Facebook friendship (though not allowing Facebook may be the bigger help there). With so many people using it and communicating back and forth, there aren't as many instances of people faking a player's identity, which was happening all the time a few years ago.

Removing the rule for current players makes me uneasy... we don't want people stalking the kids in an effort to be the first to "report" on them, and definitely don't want to get into the business of gossiping about their private lives. That intense need to know tends to fade to general interest as players graduate, so it wouldn't be as quite as big a deal to allow tweets of former players that are relevant to OSU or their careers... except that opening the door to how individual personalities don't always fit into the board's perception of the team in general brings its own issues.

That's simply discussion; I don't have a firm opinion either way right now. BPRT gets the cleanup if we change things and the site goes bonkers, so I'd tend to say keep the current rules until such time as they may be fully comfortable changing it. Besides, if former players want their thoughts posted on BP, they surely know they're welcome to do it themselves.

Somebody brought up the point that media members whose tweets we allow often quote tweets that we don't allow. Regardless of how the medium may have matured, I believe that BP has adopted the preferable standard.

The Rashard Mendenhall example is an exception where the tweets are the news. More often than not though the tweets that we'd see (and the ones that we've been trying to prevent) are ones where the tweets are considered to be a source for news rather than being the story themselves. I think that BP's current stance on that is worthwhile. It's the nature of the internet and following college sports - there's going to be tons of rumor and innuendo and misinformation out there. The media (and recruiting media in particular) are often more concerned with being first rather than being correct. I'm glad that BP takes reasonable measures to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Is a part of the larger discussion sometimes missing because of this policy? Of course. I don't think BP has ever been about being all things to all people or encompassing the entire discussion from across the internet. At risk of sounding a bit like Ricky Stanzi - there are other places on the internet to participate in the discussion if the topic or manner of discussion doesn't fit in here. Being Buckeye fans, we are fortunate to have an abundance of places to communicate with like-minded people. There are places out there - if you want to talk about player tweets, you can do it elsewhere. If you want to bash players, you can do it elsewhere. If you want to curse in a recruit's thread, you can do it elsewhere. If you think our boards are organized poorly, well, there's always the ESPN boards.

I would never want to see the tweets of recruits or current players become a part of the discussion here. It's creepy.
