Two teams with the very best winning percentages

Ale Ti

Freshman
in college football face off in what should be a great NC game in less than a week, hopefully.

Hello Buckeyes, I'm an Alabama fan and it's great to be here and it's great to have a chance to discuss this topic. I love stats like this and I'm sure many of you do also.

What better time to talk about things like this then when two titans are about to clash once again.

Here:

Alabama
957-322-44
.740 winning percentage. Best in nation.

Ohio State
943-326-53
.733

is how it stands as we type to each other.

Notre Dame and Michigan round out the Top 4. Boise State not included because Boise State. Ohio State is not only second best in winning percentage, all time, but I feel they are also right behind Alabama as the second best college football team to ever exist, edging out ND.

Good luck on Monday and I hope all of you have a good week and stay in good health.

Of course, these are the real stats. Not stats re-calculated by pencil-neck, 135 pound office workers at NCAA headquarters who decided to magically, somehow, make wins disappear from both Alabama and Ohio State's official records.

The games were played by both teams and the stats/#'s I listed are the true, verified and honest stats. These games were played and they count. The players on both teams suited up, walked onto the grid-iron, and played the games.

Here is a great resource to get "accurate" stats on true winning percentages. Click on a team and the real win/loss record is shown. No excuses, no asterisks, no notes at the bottom of the page, just the real win/loss record of every team.

Of course, its not been updated yet for this season so you have to add each team's wins/losses for the current season.

Welcome, and thanks. You may be interested in this thread.

Yes, I was interested and thanks a lot. That was impressive the amount of time put into those calculations, and the dedication to it over a long period of time. You did a great job on that. Have you ever thought of starting your own stat site? Good ones relating to college football are getting so hard to find now.

Even Sports Reference only goes back to 1902. Well, for most college football teams, football started before 1902 no matter what arbitrary determinations sites like these use to rationalize their lack of complete information.

Billingsley's may not be the best format and lacks side by side comparisions, etc... but, it's all there. All the games are there from the very first game played between Rutgers and Princeton.

Thanks, I wish I had created something like the old cfbdatawarehouse site about 15 years ago. The sites now have different information, since some include all games played and others exclude ‘vacated’ games.

Counting all of the games, the Crimson Tide will probably pass TTUN (that team up north) by the end of the 2023 season. They’ll still claim the record until their number gets exceeded by somebody without the vacated games, because other than having the largest toilet bowl, Ann Arbor has almost nothing else to hang onto. The Buckeyes are doing their best at taking everything away from them, and Bama is helping in that regard.

No reasonable person disputes the fact that Alabama is the most successful college football program in history. Ten years ago Oklahoma could have made an argument if only the 1936-and-after time period was used, but that’s no longer the case. Having an elite coach in place for a decade or more can make a big difference in the historical data.

View attachment 28232 This is one I saw today. Again, win totals seem to be much lower overall so maybe not updated, but obviously both programs have a ton of tradition and a history of putting winning football teams on the field.

No, the numbers are updated but, in my opinion, incorrect. Both Ohio State's and Alabama's stats, and everyone else's, should be listed as they correlate to the actual games played on the football field.

It was a real shame when cfbdatawarehouse quit updating and maintaining their site. Now, as you say, every site is different. Some include this and don't include that, some start counting games in 1902, some in 1936, etc... It's all arbitrary according to the whims of the creator of the site.

I wish all the luck in the world to Ohio State in taking away everything from Michigan, like you say.
