Sam Webb: Recruiting

Last Friday, Joliet, Ill., was the scene of one of the best opening game performances in the Midwest. Joliet Catholic star Ty Isaac, a junior tailback, rushed 17 times for 221 yards, including touchdown runs of 46 and 70 yards.

As impressive as those numbers are, it was his final play that will almost certainly become the stuff of lore.

Down 31-25 with less than a minute to go, Isaac hauled in an over-the-shoulder pass as he ran down the sideline, broke free of a would-be tackler, then sprinted 75 yards for the winning score.

"Man, it was awesome," Isaac said. "It's tough to not think about it, but me and everybody (on the team) discussed it, and it's just Week 1. We can't get complacent and satisfied, but right off the bat it was a great feeling. Even I was like, 'Wow!' It was just a great play overall. It was a good throw, a great catch, and I made some things happen."

Free Rivals - Lincoln linebacker tearing it up

RB Ty Isaac, Joliet (Ill.) Catholic Academy (2013)

At 6-3 and 215 pounds, Isaac will draw comparisons to Adrian Peterson because of his size and upright running style, but his style more closely resembles that of Eric Dickerson. Isaac does not physically beat up tacklers in the way that Peterson does. He's more of a surgical runner, cutting up defenses on his way to big rushing totals this fall. Isaac has uncanny agility for a big running back, and displays great speed in the open field - the same traits Dickerson displayed in his Hall of Fame career.

Although he is an upright runner, Isaac still does a great job of running behind his pads. He is patient and will wait for holes to open, then use a great burst to get upfield. This fall we have only seen him on offense, but his size fits the mold of a collegiate outside linebacker. Unless we see some amazing defensive performances, though, expectations are Isaac will play running back in college. He is a tremendous offensive weapon.

Would he play RB at OSU? If so, what does that say about Green?

I think it says more about some of the current RBs than future RBs. Don't want to get into speculation, but I can see either movement to a slot (Harvin) position or leaving the program. Either that or UFM doesn't think we have a good shot at keeping Dunn, which seems unlikely after the latest news of his visit.

IMO, I don't think it says anything about either. This isn't the same recruiting style that we're used to seeing (obviously). Urban is going to offer big time talent, no matter who is currently/going to be on the roster. I love it

I don't know that this says anything about Green as much as it does about Meyer's strategy of recruiting a number of guys he likes for the same position. Tressel targeted one or a small number of guys for one position for the most part, but Meyer seems to offer a larger pool. It's just a different way of doing it.

By the way, Isaac rushed for 515 yards on 26 carries and 6 TDs in the state championship game this year...and his team still lost.
