U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

Anybody with a clue, which is more than me, tell me why we currently have more talent across the world kicking ass than we've ever had and our MNT sucks?
Short answer is because we didn’t have people across the world kicking ass the last 4-6 years...we had aging guys content to play in MLS as designated players and “stars” and coaches who would play those aging guys no matter what, even in friendlies and gold cups. The youngsters will take a bit of time to gel, but in the right hands the MNT should be much more formidable in 2022 or so.

Men’s team is extremely young and extremely talented right now. Very exciting times ahead.

Young kids all over the globe, playing high level soccer. Been nice to watch them finally get to put on the national jersey for a couple games.

0-0 vs. Wales last week.

Beating up Panama 6-2 now.

That midfield is on point! If Berhalter can find one or, preferably 2, great defenders this team has ridiculous potential.

The high level thing is key, and its really new. This isn't Fulhamerica and the Scottish Premiership. Its also not (well, it is in some cases, which is ok) oh he's in Europe kicking ass for Leverkusen 2.

These are key players for Chelsea, Juventus, Barcelona, Dortmund, where the fuck does Adams play, Leipzig...

So then, they get to play in champions league and all that shit. Not fighting relegation every year.

... And it seems like we have sort of a generational batch of them where Pulisic seems ancient at 22.

Be nice to pick up this Musah kid

Stars from the United States men's national team had days to remember in Europe on Saturday, with Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Giovanni Reyna all scoring for their respective clubs on a record-breaking day.

It was the first time in 15 years that three different Americans scored in one of the five major European leagues on the same day, according to Opta. The last time, on Aug. 27, 2005, it was Brian McBride, Jermaine Jones and Giovanni's father, Claudio Reyna, who found the net.

I’m so damn excited for the future here. Fun, talented, world class players.

The weird part is, its like he totally mistimed it and still puts a bunch of power behind it.

Key here is, its not the future, its the present.

Covid messes everything up obviously but, I imagine Berhalter already 16-17 guys that he knows is gonna be the core of qualifying and 2022, and now its more of a question of which ones of the younger ones (and by this I mean, the ones not playing UEFA for big clubs) might be able to improve in qualifying and which MLS dudes is he gonna need to fill out the pool to get through this. (OK, he had more that 16-17 of course, but in my head its the first time where I can remember sitting here feeling like there's some spots other than GK and CB where there is depth and where I'm also not scratching my head about who is gonna be able to handle "X" role... (I mean, I have a few minor concerns but none of them include situations where we have to rely on guys I won't name here but seem all to now play for KC or Salt Lake. )

Well said. I should have said the future is here already, which is so weird. I'm not sitting here hoping for Brek Sheas and Julian Greens or Zelalem or the tens of other "prospects" playing in some Scandinavian 2nd league to maybe, hopefully, someday do something. Not to mention they've pushed out the old guard of Salt Lake midfielders or whatever else we could trot out there. They're here already and it's a pretty complete list of options across the roster.

Best friend/college roomie works for US Soccer with the YNT (admin side, but still very cool and plenty of insights). We talk all the time how there's even more on the way.

Anyway, they close out the 2020 calendar tonight vs. El Salvador, 7:30 ET on ESPNNews (???) or TUDN/Unimas. Should be a handful of debuts with a more Olympic-aged roster.

I keep forgetting about the damned Olympics.

Is that U-24 now?

So, they have that, the Gold Cup, that Concacaf Nations Leauge thing and start qualifying?

U-23 (+3 overage) usually but moved up U-24 because of postponement. Think Concacaf qualifies in March for Olympics in June? Curious what roster they use. Gold Cup in July and “The Octagon” (old Hex) in September.

No clue on Concacaf Nations  Hard to keep up with all the national/federation/club tourneys now. Seems like I find some match pop up every day if I’m surfing around.

Oh, Under 20 world cup while you're at it.... May to June.

Yipes.

I guess I'd make the U-20 roster really young, kind of pick out a group for the olympics of dude you don't want to use for the Gold Cup/Qualifying and if someone (especially the over age guy(s) really over perform you can work them in later..

Figure out a pool for Gold/[welcome to the]Octagon...

Send Brek Shea and Graham Zusi to handle the Concacaf thing.
