UF OL Ronnie "Taz" Wilson (official thread)

Just to follow up on the good point Oh8ch made, let's be careful to avoid actively trying to sell Ronnie (or any other recruit) on OSU, and talking down any other program. Mr.B entered an ethical gray area (as far as our compliance office is concerned) recently when he talked down Texas during the Sanchez broadcast, and I'd rather we didn't stray in that direction ourselves.

Having recruits on the boards is a great thing. It gives them an opportunity to get to know more about OSU, the great traditions and atmosphere, and the fans. It gives us an opportunity to get to know the guys behind the stats better. I'd like to encourage more of this, and in order to do that, we're all going to have to be good about keeping ourselves in check.

This isn't a "scolding", "warning" or anything else you might expect elsewhere. Just trying to get the thread back on track, and make sure we're in line with what's expected of us. Something I have an active dialog going about with the university. Thanks!

To 'Taz' and the other recruits browsing, welcome to the site. We're a passionate group of fans, and have a lot of reasons to be proud of our program. So it's easy to get excited about a recruiting class as great as this one already is, that could well be greater with the addition of some key prospects.

Go Bucks, have a safe season and pancake everyone in your path!

Another interesting note: Ohio State invented the "pancake block" statistic. Oralando Pace was being promoted as a candidate for the heisman It was realized that most of the voters could not possibly all the games and that statistics could weigh heavily on their decision. Since their really was no statistic that could be used to show the individual dominance of an offensive lineman, they invented the statistic to help give the voters an idea of Pace's dominance.

Taken from CFN's 100 Greeatest Players of all time:

The Pancake: Pace was so dominating with his blocks that a term was created for the way he knocked a defensive player on his back - the Pancake Block. In his junior season, Pace was credited with 80 Pancakes. As good as he was blocking for the running game, he was equally adept at pass blocking not allowing a sack in his last two years at Ohio State. One of his greatest games was his humiliation of Illinois' Simeon Rice completely shutting down the Illini star and registering ten Pancakes that day.

A few things to consider

Taz, you have a terrific opportunity. Very few people get a chance to go to the college of their choice, whether it be on schollie or paid. As someone who has a D-1 schollie offers, you are truly blessed. Don't screw it up. You have 5 years of hard work ahead of you. Keep your nose clean, hit the books, stay focused.

Find yourself a school that fits with your goals.

I don't know what career path you want to persue, but I assure you, no other University has as many courses of study as Ohio State. It is truly all things to all people. You pick the major, and I assure you, Ohio State has it. You want a bust-ass major? OSU's Engineering programs are among the country's best. You want Allied Medical? Ohio State's teaching hospital is world renound. OSU's cancer research facilities are tops in the world. Want to learn Swahili? Got it.

Take a look at OSU's course offerings handbook and you will be truly amazed. There are programs for the gifted, not-so gifted, and everything between. Yes, you can screw around like a lot of kids do (OSU...the best 5 years of my life is an old joke around campus) but glancing at your academics, I figure you'll do fine (I had your roughly your scores and graduated in Chem. Engineering with the same GPA I had in HS.

You want fun on Saturday nights? Columbus has got more of that than most, too. Our school has been called an alumni factory. We are tight, and as you might have guessed, very, very passionate about OSU football.

For good or bad, playing at OSU is like playing in the pros..or for the Yankees. Lots of expectations; everybody is watching and everybody cares. For me, there are only a small handful of towns/cities that are as football crazy as Columbus. Lincoln, NE and Happy Valley, PA.

Well, I've talked your ear off...good luck in your decision-making process.

Taz,

Another, and very important, reason is that tOSU has a very good program in your field of academic interest.

The combination of academic and athletic opportunity and support is unbeatable. Throw in the general atmosphere and how well you will be prepared for your life after college and you can't go wrong with selecting tOSU.

Good luck to you & Go Bucks!
