Univ. of Illinois being sued over Chief Illiniwek

I dn't understand why native Americans are so offended by the names of their tribes being used as sports teams. You'd think that they'd be honored. It also keeps the memory of their heritage alive. On the other hand I can understand how mascots such as chief knockahomer would be offensive, that guy was an asshat.

Oftentimes they aren't.

The move to ban Indian affiliations from mascots is primarily from white folks who know what's best for we poor exploited ignorant savages...err gentle natives.

a recent SI poll suggests that although Native American activists are virtually united in opposition to the use of Indian nicknames and mascots, the Native American population sees the issue far differently. Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81% of Native American respondents said no. As for pro sports, 83% of Native American respondents said teams should not stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters and symbols. Opinion is far more divided on reservations, yet a majority (67%) there said the usage by pro teams should not cease, while 32% said it should.

Yes, pale face speak with forked tongue....will have to consult with the great white father in Washington.
Seriously though it is a vocal minority or the individuals who no better than the rest of us that make these decisions. Speaking as a native American (ok only 1/16th) I could give a rip what sports teams are called, however if I was Irish or a Wolverine I would sue in a NY sec.....

To be fair Chief Wahoo is pretty fuckin' bad but it'll never go away due to the money involved.

Meanwhile colleges that for the most part do try to be sensitive to tribal concerns & present positive images get strong armed by the NCAA.

I always thought they were mad in how mascots/logos portrayed native americans, not the names.

And no one would care much about him either if the Indians didn't suck so badly year after year. I think Cleveland fans are threatening to rename the team the Carmonas.

Based on recent cultural developments by native americans, its reasonable to conclude that they'd prefer the mascots to be changed from "warriors" and "Braves" to "stickmen" and "dealers"

Probably the same white folks that were in the theater watching "The Help" with me. Every time a white person made an ass of him or herself they would giggle jubilantly.
