Junior Nagbe keeps Akron at forefront Forward is second Zips player in row to win Hermann Trophy
By Michael Beaven

The Hermann Trophy is in the possession of a University of Akron men's soccer player for the second consecutive year.

Zips junior forward Darlington Nagbe concluded his collegiate career Friday at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis when he was awarded the crystal soccer ball, the most prestigious individual honor in college soccer.

More than impressive that Akron has it's second "Heisman Trophy" winner in the last three years... and runner up two years ago

Akron Beacon Journal; said:
--Porter said he should also get a boost from his team's cumulative 3.5 grade-point average last semester, which he said ranked eighth-highest in NCAA Division I.

''That makes a great statement that not only we're a soccer school, but we're a university that's looking to prepare kids for life after soccer,'' Porter said. ''That plays into the decision a lot, especially with the parents.''

Still is going to be very difficult to replace 7 players that went into the pros.. and get back to the same level soon...

Akron's class

Kyle Culbertson, FW (Columbus Crew)
Andy Chiu, FW (Real Salt Lake)
Wil Trapp, MF (Columbus Crew)
DeAndre Yedlinm, MF (Seattle Sounders FC)
David Murrow, D
Bryan Gallego, D (New York Red Bulls)

Really nice class, they'll be right back on top.

EDIT: The MLS teams listed to the players side is the club team they played for. A lot of these kids were in MLS academies.

Akron looks good despite losing 7 starters

Akron was in Spain last week and played two premier club teams. They beat Rayo Vallecano's reserves 3-0, who were 1st in Spain's 2nd Division. Then they played Real Madrid's reserves tough and left with a 1-0 loss.

The team is looking good. Can't wait until the season starts this fall.

Actually OSU is putting together a pretty strong class for 2012 with a number of top 100's and a few D1 transfers (BG/Virginia). In this group are 3 crew academy past or present players so there is a local flavor as well.

UA soccer: Zips' recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the nation

University of Akron men's soccer coach Caleb Porter has done it again.

Porter announced Wednesday that six players have signed national letters of intent to join UA in 2012, giving the Zips their second No. 1 recruiting class during Porter's tenure.

UA received the No. 1 ranking for this recruiting class from topdrawersoccer.com (TDS).

The group has four of the topdrawersoccer.com's top 11 recruits in the country.

and that top 4 of 11 doesn't even include another signee: Foldesy guided Cleveland St. Ignatius High School to Division I state titles in 2010 and 2011 and a national title in 2010. He was selected the Ohio High School Boys Division I Player of the Year as a senior.
