UCF Golden Knights (2017 National Champs....sort of)

I didn't say it was right. I said it's a scam... but what's UCF rightfully celebrating an undefeated season have to do with it ??
Seems a pretty odd spot to stand on a soapbox about student fees.

They're not celebrating an undefeated season. They're celebrating being national champions, which is something that only exists in their own heads and the heads of some other mid-major wanna-be's trying to live vicariously through them.

As somebody here posted, they're currently recognized as #1 by one of the mythical orgs that NCAA recognizes. That puts them in same category as anyone else claiming a 2017 NC.

Actually, the Wilson computer ratings were recognized only during the BCS era, not anymore. Wilson's computer rating was not recognized alone, but as part of a composite score that would not rank UCF among the top 5. Also, Wilson 2017 is not final. UCF are tied for first with Georgia. Georgia wins, they lose that claim too.

UCF is a solid top 15 team that played a schedule strength equivalent to playing the average AAC or MWC team. Auburn was the first team that they faced in Sagarin's top 30. Only Memphis was ranked in the top 40 by Sagarin. The Buckeyes faced 3 teams in the top 10, 7 in the top 30, and 8 in the top 40.

UCF can be proud of a year in which they went undefeated against a weak schedule featuring 9 teams outside the top 50 and 5 teams outside the top 100 before beating an over-rated 3-loss SEC team in a bowl game. Nothing else.

Why do you give a shit?

It's not like we have a perfect system that UCF just thinks is unfair so they're throwing their own party. We have a broken system with no clear or concise criteria that has told us for two year straight now that a team that finished 3rd in their own conference should be playing for the national championship because they're still the "best" for reasons. If some mid-major that won't get the Boise State media treatment and with fans I'll never see wants to throw a fuck you at that system, I say go for it.

The only people I've seen that are pissed about this are fans of old money teams and I don't really understand it.

yeah they should sit down and worship the dynasty that won a playoff berth by beating absolutely no one of conference and losing the only quality matchup they had, which was the very team they just beat.

This is a garbage field devoid of even one great team let alone four, which is why Saban got a lifetime achievement award berth.

There are teams that would whip the undefeated mid majors. Then there are those that get utah'd. Alabama can't get utah'd again if they faced Frost? With their poor man's JT Barrett at QB?

Clemson already had their loss to a trash team. So did the team that should've finished fourth. Oklahoma would probably win a shoot out since they have half a football team. I would say that uga would be my only confident bet against UCF but then folks knew Auburn would manhandle them.

You don't get to bar them from accessing the treehouse and still rule as the governing body of what happens outside of it.

You're not the only one out there making the claim, but calling Wolfe today an "officially recognized poll" is a bit of a reach. Wolfe's system is mentioned in the NCAA Record Book as part of a "historical list of poll selectors".
The NCAA does not "award" national championships in FBS, but it does "recognize" them. The Poll Systems History List linked above is interesting and good for a few laughs, but it is not the officially recognized list. Here's the officially recognized list: LINK

Under the Officially Recognized list, Ohio State has national championships for 1942; 1954; 1957; 1961; 1968; 1970; 2002; and 2014.

Under the Poll Systems History list, Ohio State could claim additional national championships for 1933; 1944; 1945; 1969; 1973; 1974; and 1975. Ohio State does not claim NCs for any of those years (but should for 1944, IMHO), although other schools like Alabama and Michigan do claim unrecognized national championships.

In any event, the only current Officially Recognized selector is the College Football Playoff, so Central Florida has no chance at an NCAA recognized national championship.

Any other year I'd be laughing at UCF but this would have been the year to put them in and see what they can do.

I have no disagreements with you on either Alabama's lack of worthiness to make the playoff or that UCF should have been given a shot. I'm just saying that they and their conference are willing participants in the current system and to now scream "national championship" when they're clearly not going to be the NC under that system is ridiculous.
