This is a pretty cool setup that I think could work if time were not a factor for these student athletes (also injuries would be an issue too). Check out our second round game against Washington State:

http://collegefootballnews.com/2005/ULT/West_2nd.htm

No. 6 Ohio State 12 ... No. 12 Washington State 7
In an ugly game, Ohio State managed four Mike Nugent field goals and held Washington State to 219 yards and a 12-yard Jason Hill touchdown catch. The two teams combined to turn it over nine times including a Cougar fumbled snap on its own two, but two stops and a penalty kept the Buckeyes out of the end zone. Wazzu was only able to get across midfield twice.
Player of the Game - Ohio State PK Mike Nugent connected on field goals of 53, 38, 21 and 40 yards
Fun Stat - Penalties: Ohio State 13 for 150 yards - Washington State 11 for 125

3rd Round - No. 6 Ohio State at No. 1 Texas

Nuuuuge comes thru again!

Wow, this kid is still earning buckeye leaves even in February!

No. 6 Ohio State 23 ... No. 5 Texas Tech 21
Ohio State PK Mike Nugent hit a 49-yard field goal with one second remaining to put the Buckeyes into the West Finals. Texas Tech had the ball with 1:48 to play but failed to run out the clock forced to punt it away with :53 to play. The Buckeyes started on their own 12 and got two long passes to Ted Ginn Jr. and a 13-yard scramble to Justin Zwick to get into position for Nugent's attempt.

OSU loses to Utah

http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/ULT/West_Finals.htm

No. 2 Utah 28 ... No. 6 Ohio State 26

Utah's offense wasn't its normally dominant self, but it did enough in the fourth quarter to slip past the Buckeyes with a 14-0 run over the final eight minutes.

Down 26-14, Utah's Alex Smith, who played on an injured ankle suffered just before halftime, scrambled for a 11-yard touchdown with just over eight minutes to play. The Ohio State offense, which had moved the ball at will over the first three quarters, couldn't get back on track as QB Justin Zwick only completed one of nine passes in the fourth quarter and the running game was held to 29 yards.

Getting the ball on its own 23 with 3:32 to play, Smith engineered a pounding 11-play drive finishing with a two-yard Marty Johnson touchdown run with :41 to play.

"People call our offense finesse and say we can't be physical," said Utah head coach Urban Meyer. "We showed on that final drive that we can pound with the most physical teams in college football when we have to. That drive showed how tough we can be."

Zwick misfired on his final three passes unable to get star PK Mike Nugent in range for a potential game-winning kick.

The Buckeye offense was able to amass 513 yards of total offense, but several promising drives became first half field goals instead of touchdowns as Nugent connected from 24, 29, 34 and 28 yards. A 15-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes gave the Buckeyes a 19-7 lead into halftime.

"We had our chance to put it away early," said Zwick. "If we had turned a few of those field goals into touchdowns, we'd be off to the Final Four. Utah is too good to leave the door open like that."

The Utes came up with a good drive midway though the third quarter ending in a four-yard Smith touchdown run. The Buckeyes answered with a long, 6:59 drive closing out the third quarter with a two-yard Lydell Ross touchdown run for a 26-14 lead.

But the Utah defense stiffened late only allowing one Buckeye first down over the final 11:18 and 38 yards.

"It wasn't our best overall performance, but we'll take it," said Meyer. "Good teams overcome adversity, and we proved tonight that we're a good team."

Player of the Game - Utah QB Alex Smith completed 19 of 33 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown pass and ran 15 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns
Fun Stat - Trips inside the red zone: Ohio State 8 - Utah 4
Virginia Tech 24 - Oklahoma 17
USC 34 - Michigan 14
Auburn 45 - Louisville 21

There fictional playoffs are always fun to read. But you knew that before they released the "results" that Utah was going to win. I can see them having Utah get to the Championship game and lose to USC. But hate to admit that their write up of the game was pretty right on. You can see us move the ball and then tightening up in the red zone to get Field Goals instead of Touchdowns.

Now for us letting them score 14 points in the last quarter to come back to win... now that is unbelievable but they have to write up an intersting game.

Didn't actually see any stats so I'm thinking they have Nugent missing two field goals??

8- Trips into the red zone
2- touchdowns (Holmes and Ross)
4- Nugent field goals

leaving 2 trips into the red zone with zero points. Not happening unless there were turnovers. With JT, those two trips would've gotten at least 3 points.
We were screwed! I demand a recount!!!!

No. 1 USC 31 ... No. 2 Utah 21
Orange Bowl, Miami FlMatt Leinart threw two touchdown passes and LenDale White ran for two short scores to win Ultimate National Title VII over a plucky Utah team that had to fight an uphill battle.

The Utes outgained the Trojans 487 yards to 420 but wasn't able show much for it continually pinned deep by USC punter Tom Malone who put five kicks inside the 17.

Utah got on the board first with a three-yard Marty Johnson touchdown run set up by a 57-yard Steve Savoy run off a reverse. The Ute defense held tough in the first half only allowing a 38-yard field goal and forcing two turnovers.

Leinart heated up in the second quarter with two long passes to Dwayne Jarrett and a 14-yard strike to Steve Smith to give the Trojans a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Malone also got hot with punts on the Utah six and 11 yard lines.

"Everyone knows about our offense, the defense has received more than its share of credit, and Reggie Bush has highlighted our special teams," said USC head coach Pete Carroll. "But when our kicking game is working, it's as good as any in America. Tom had a phenomenal game and bailed us out of some horrible situations."
While Malone's accuracy was featured, his most important kick, a 69-yard bomb, came late in the first half after the USC offense stalled on its own 14 with 1:16 to play. The Utes weren't able to score as the Trojans took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.

"With a quarterback like they have and an explosive offense, Malone saved us at least three points," said Carroll. "Our defense wasn't having its best night, but it's hard to score when you're starting as deep as they were."

USC took the opening drive of the second half 68 yards in 13 plays as White, who had 51 rushing yards on the drive, powered his way for a two-yard score and a 17-7 lead.

Utah would answer with an impressive drive of its own going 72 yards in only five plays finishing with a five-yard Alex Smith bootleg for a touchdown.

USC's offense was having problems in the face of a fired up Utah defense, but the Utes had a hard time taking advantage starting late third quarter drives on its 17 and five-yard lines. The bad field position saved USC able to start at midfield leading to a three play drive getting a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jarrett with :31 to play in the third quarter.

A big kickoff return allowed the Utes room to breathe, and Smith took advantage with a seven-play, 58-yard drive and a six-yard touchdown pass to Paris Warren for to close the gap to 24-21 with 10:19 to play.

"We had them in trouble," said Utah head coach Urban Meyer. "We had all of the momentum and it felt like we were still in the game after the lousy field position. But there's a reason Matt Leinart won the Heisman and he was incredible when he had to be."

Leinart, who finished the game completing 16 of 32 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions, went 6-of-6 on the ensuing drive highlighted by a 14-yard pass to Smith after breaking free from what appeared to be a sure sack on third down.
"Our guys were there and we had the drive stopped," said Meyer. "Great players make great plays, and that was the one that changed the game."
A 16-yard pass to Dominique Byrd down to the one set up one-yard White score. Utah went three and out on the ensuing drive, but got the ball back one more time. Unfortunately for the Utes, Malone put his kick on the Utah nine with 1:53 to play. The final Ute drive stalled on its own 41 and USC was able to run out the clock.
"We've come so close the last few years that to finally win this is incredible," said Carroll. "We beat a very good team today. We're very fortunate to get out of this alive."

Player of the Game
- USC P Tom Malone punted seven times averaging 48.4 yards per kick putting five inside the 20

Obviously he got screwed in the Heisman ballotting due to the media lovefest for Leinart and Bush.
