“Urban’s very thorough. Urban has spent his due diligence getting ready for this job,” Johnson said. “He knew what he was getting into when he accepted the job. We had numerous conversations during the job process. And I think he’ll do a great job. He knows how important personnel is. He knows how to deal with people.”

College football: 25 biggest what-ifs of the 2010s

19. Urban Meyer sticks around

There’s no doubt that Urban Meyer was a terrific college football coach. No matter where he went, eventually, that program won in a big way.

During his final coaching run, Meyer made the Ohio State Buckeyes perpetual contenders. After putting together another great year in 2018, Meyer decided that he had enough and abruptly retired. Taking his immediate place is current lead man, Ryan Day.

By all accounts, Day has proven to be a sagacious decision. He’s led the Buckeyes to multiple trips to the College Football Playoffs but just hasn’t been able to close the show. Well, despite Day’s stellar capabilities, no one is mistaking him for Meyer, which begs the question, what if he never left?

In 2019, Day led the Buckeyes to the second overall playoff seed. They would ultimately lose to eventual champs, the Clemson Tigers, in the opening round. Although Clemson went on to have an undefeated season, they got all they could handle from the Buckeyes, winning by only six points. Could Meyer have given them the extra juice they needed to pull off the win? We think so.

Apparently these people just make stuff up and claim it happened. Clemson was easily beaten by LSU for the 2019 title. But that doesn't fit the narrative they are going for.

Do these ass clowns not remember UFM vs Clemson in 2016?

Urban has definitely come in more rah-rah college coach-y than I thought he would.

Theyre really gonna have to be thorough in draft and FA to make that work. I thought he’d pull back on it bc it will certainly rub some grown ass multi-millionaire men the wrong way.

He’s gonna need a few years to cultivate the roster to where that style “may” work.

Will be interesting to see how much time he gets if first few years are bumpy.

I hope he makes me eat my words but I’ve been pretty underwhelmed so far (really disliked his OC hire to be honest). And the strength and conditioning coach fiasco was such an unforced error….really bad decision making there.

It wasn't anyone from our staff...so it felt like a good decision to me.

Why do I think UFM will come out of this fine no matter what happens.Teflon …
His coaching hires at Ohio State led to a disaster of a defense in 2013 thanks in part to hiring Withers, a missed national title in ‘15 because the OC transition was completely botched and carried over into ‘16 with one of the most disastrous offensive bowl game performances ever, a defense that started to fall apart after replacing Fickell with Bill Davis, culminating in embarrassing losses to Iowa in ‘17 and Purdue in ‘18 that dropped Ohio State out of playoff consideration both years, and of course, who could forget the all time classic of keeping Zach Smith around for an extended period of time despite failing to meet basic expectations of an employee at home and in the office that directly led to Meyer being [strikethrough]fired[/strikethrough] forced into retiring.

And then you’ve got the previously mentioned error of Brian Doyle.

Based on that track record of personnel decisions, what could possibly go wrong now?

Unless you’re talking about just in general, in which case I agree. He’s a millionaire, I’m sure he’ll be fine even if getting fired by the Jaguars is in his future.

Edit: also, a questionable OC hire you say? After treating Barrett like a fullback and insisting on maintaining read option with Haskins, does anyone else think Meyer was looking for an OC who would agree to incorporate QB run plays with Lawrence? I believe Meyer is on record specifically gushing over him as a dual threat. What could possibly go wrong with (probably) planning to run the ball with your franchise QB in the NFL?

Spending a first round pick on a RB, only to come out and say he wasn’t who you really wanted in that spot and then planning to use that first round RB as a WR seems like a recipe for disaster as well.

But I’m not a championship winning coach. What do I know?
