gee....let me think...if i were a student at The Ohio State University.....and knowing my love of football...

how much would i give for a chance to take a class on football that is taught by Coach Tressel....

Hell...Coach could charge 2000 a night for a two hour give-and-take on football...

My O

At most schools there are classes for every sport that are taught by the head coach of the individual sports. I have never tried to schedule for the classes but it is printed in the schedule book so I guess I could if I wanted too. I dont see anything wrong with it. Sure they wont do much in the class, but when I took bowling all I did was bowl three times a week, nothing else. SO if a football player takes football it would be reasonable for them to play football once a week for three hours and get a grade. Just my opinion

NBC has officially become a mouthpiece for Notre Dame football. Things turn bad as ND loses to BYU and Willingham is under intense scrutiny. How convenient to have this story to divert attention to other programs.

And who do they focus on? USC and FSU (ND rivals), OSU and Penn St (recruiting rivals), and KSU (one of the few universities that would waste time talking to NBC). NBC also decides to make statements like "some of these universities only graduate 20% of their athletes." Which ones? They don't say, so I guess we should just assume that they all do.

NBC also does very little research. Hey NBC, how much of a time commitment is football as opposed to a 3 or 4-hour class? Can marching band members take a band class? (answer:yes) Are there other PE classes exactly like football? (answer: yes) Hell, Mizzou has a golf class that counts as an upper-level business class. Students (generally business majors, not student-athletes) meet once a week (Friday) on the golf course.

Now that the Domers beat Michigan, NBC can return to covering football and whatnot. But I'm sure they'll save that report, because you never know when ND will go on a painful losing streak again.

My favorite part is how Myles Brand acts shocked when he 'learns' this is going on. Was he asleep when the Harrick scandal at Georgia happened? That was this exact thing. I'm sure the NCAA will air a couple of those "most of us will go pro in something other than sports" commercials and smile.

That makes sense, do you know how many business deals are done on the golf course? I took 157L01 for that very reason.

Also, as a sports and leisure student I would kill to get into Tressel's class.

Well since SI brought this up before NBC blame it on SI !

A one time class is one thing but the fact that it is given 2 credits and OSU players can take it up to 5 times is just a tool to help the football team!

If this had been done by a SEC team and OSU was not involved YOU ALL WOULD THINK IT WAS THE WORST ACADEMIC ISSUE IN THE WORLD! But since OSU is invlolved I guees that make it ok! PLEASE!!

Talk about seeing this issue thru scarlet glasses!

Chief, climb down off your soap box please. Several posters gave very insightful responses to your original post. Nobody is looking at this through scarlet glasses....if anything you would appear to be wearing your ND glasses.

"just a tool to help the football team"

There are also these classes for soccer and volleyball and softball and baseball and track & field and any other Varsity sport at OSU. Have a look. (100 level classes) Hey but wait we ARE the dominate school in Synchronized Swimming so we must be padding their schedules too.

Then there are these classes as well that everyone can take.... (see the 600 level classes)

You might try facing reality yourself Chief. Don't stand there on that shaky soapbox of yours and try to tell us that your boys in South Bend don't have similar opportunities. You come over here and stir up crap like this and then get offended when somebody slams you for it.

Chief, whats this class? Took it right off the course guide at ND. Don't throw stones, man. Any smart Uni is going to offer a class to allow athletes in-season to be full-time and still be able to handle a 35 hour a week practice schedule.

Hey NDChump. Are you saying ND doesn't offer any phys ed classes? To the contrary, every notre dumb football player takes four phys ed courses, including two their freshman year. These count towards their 12 hours for fulltime status fall quarter, and also towards their degree! How much do you wanna bet that half the football team is in the weightlifting class? Fitness development? "Contemporary Topics for College Students," whatever the hell that is?

Physical Education
Chair of Physical Education: Thomas Kelly

The objective of the physical education department is to develop skills, knowledge, greater interest and awareness of the need and benefits offered through wellness and lifetime leisure activities. It is intended that through participation in various physical activities, students contribute to and enhance their physical, mental and social growth.

To complement and enhance physical education activities, the department offers a required course in Contemporary Topics for College Students. This course presents an understanding of various components of fitness and selected lifestyle issues that have an impact on the individual. Students will learn to formulate and implement their own fitness and wellness programs through self-testing, evaluations, exercises and self-assessments.

111, 112. Physical Education Activity(0-3-0) (0-3-0) Staff
All Notre Dame first-year students must take two semesters of physical education as a University requirement. However, those who enroll and remain in an ROTC program are exempted from physical education.

The department believes that basic swimming skills are important for the student. A swim test will be administered at the beginning of the year to determine each student’s ability.

Most students will be able to elect four of the following activities to complete their requirement. It is strongly recommended that activities from both the wellness and lifetime sports tracks be taken.

American Ballroom Dance
Basic Activities
Contemporary Topics for College Students
Fencing
First Aid
Fitness Development
Golf
Handball
Hiking/Orienteering
Ice Skating
Latin Ballroom Dance
Officiating
Racquet Sports
Self-Defense
Skiing: Cross Country / Downhill
Soccer
Swimming: Lifeguard Training / Lifesaving / Water Safety Instructor
Team Handball
Tennis
Volleyball
Water Aerobics
Weight Training
Yoga

All activities are offered at the beginning level; however, some activities are offered at an intermediate level. If the student has a physical disability and is unable to participate in activity classes, a specially designed program will be arranged.

Why don't you look at the facts, which we have given you repeatedly already, and stop your assinine attacks. You already know that they can use only 6 of these 10 hours towards graduation; that these 6 hours are electives and so if the athletes didn't take them, they would simply choose another 6 hours of random courses; and that these courses have been created to help the athletes with their course load during the in-season quarter.

I would also point out that in the sciences at OSU, if a student does elective lab work the general rule is they receive one credit hour for every three real hours they spend in the lab each week. Now if these courses in which students athletes can enroll are only 2 credit hours, then we might assume 6 hours per week devoted to their sport. Of course college athletes devote much more than 6 hours per week to their sport during the season. My guess is the ratio is something more like 1 credit hour to 15-20 real hours/week spent on the sport.

ND shut the hell up already. I could care less if these classes were only for football players (or any other sport) and there never was even a class (which is not the case). They do so much for the school and they put in a ton of time doing it. Shit give them credit for just that and doing nothing else and I wouldn't care. Also I bet I would learn more from a Jim Tressel taught class than from ost other classes I take. I am willing to bet he talks about other things besides football in them.
