Verizon & Android news

MaliBuckeye;2344215; said:
So, the new Verizon update for the S3 has wrecked a ton of people- 4.1.2 blows.

For me, it all started after 12 hours of perfect functioning. After that, my volume disappeared... headphones and speaker at about 40% of what they were before (and no way to fix with an app... thanks to the new update). I know that this is a Jelly Bean thing, but wow- I should be able to hear the phone ring, right?

One day later, my battery life started to go sketchy... 40% usage in only 2 hours.

Yesterday, my ability to hold a 4G signal disappeared.

Today, I can't get wifi to work and I keep dropping/missing calls. No need to fix the volume issue then, I guess.

I know I'm not alone, but still.... May need CeMo to help me (finally) switch to Cyogen or something.

UPDATE: Thanks to CeMo, I'm now rooted and booted and running CyanogenMod10.1 RC5. And it's glorious.

Couple of glitches flashing the new OS over, and several things that are mostly a "setting the system up" pain in the ass, but for the most part it's better than I expected. And easy to do, too.

Thanks again, Broseph.

The Moto X is $99 on amazon with a two year contract.

Just spoke with VZW's retention dept and snagged a great deal.

Current: 128ish 2 lines 700 min 1 unlimited data 1 feature phone with texting

New deal: 120- $60 per line, unlimited talk/text, 2 gb data, both are smartphones

(Also any data overages are very reasonable. $10 per gig so if I am high I don't have to upgrade my plan for that month and then remember to downgrade it the next month to avoid high fees)

I am pretty excited about the nexus 5 coming out soon (unofficially).

It is based on the LG g2 which has
killer performance, a stellar screen and tons of horsepower. The problem with the g2 is the bloat ware (lg's software add ons) and the case. They added the buttons to the back middle of the phone. Awkward and Verizon further crippled them by getting flatter, less tactile buttons than the att version.

The specs have been rumored and leaked most daily. The announcement should come soon.

The other huge aspect of any nexus phone besides killer hardware and stock android (with the new os) is that Google often sells nexus devices at a huge discount out of contract.

So had I not wanted to change from my unlimited plan, I could buy this phone (rumored at $299 vs 650-800 for most phones) and activate it while remaining out of contract and on my current plan.

I was planning to hold out for another 3-6 months, but am about to jump on this:

Free LG G2 w/ 2 year contract (+ $30 device activation fee)
Verizon Wireless has Verizon LG G2 5.2" 1080p Android 4.2 Smartphone w/ 2-Year Contract for $50 - $50 off with promo code VZWDEAL = Free.
Slickdeals thread for discussion of trying to preserve unlimited plan as well as the inevitable flame wars about contract pricing.

The G2 is a spectacular phone with great battery life, performance and arguably the best android screen out there. The one gripe is the cluttered notification bar but that's what custom roms are for.

The thought was that the Nexus would be the trimmer, cooler younger brother of the G2, but I'd say it's merely the business model.

Don't really get moto's here where I live, but I have seen the nexus 6, similiar phone but larger screen, and it seems to be awesome. For the money though, right now, the LG G3 is probably the device to buy.

I ended up buying the moto because I was able to snag their cyber monday $140 off promo code. I wanted something reasonably price off contract and as close to a Nexus device as possible. I would have prefered to have a N6, but it's too expensive, too large and never in stock.
