Verizon & Android news

I understand that in February Verizon plans to terminate grandfathered unlimited data plans.

Just migrated to an Edge plan for two phones - $110 per month for two lines, 10GB shared data, unlimited calling and messaging, plus phone costs (amortized over two years). It's a more rational way for VZW to do business, but some unlimited users will be pissed.

wait, WHAT?!

edit:

so far, I haven't seen anywhere on the major droid forums that suggests that...not even a topic anywhere

they probably told you that to get you off of it.
Not at all; I was going to need to abandon unlimited in any case, since Verizon closed that loophole of transferring upgrades to keep unlimited. I wasn't going to pay full list ($700) for the new phone just to keep unlimited.

Nonetheless, it's certainly possible that both the BB and VZW reps were not being truthful. I guess we'll find out in February.

Can anyone guess what website I'm going to suggest for tech deals? :p

Verizon GSM Unlocked HTC One M8 (Seller Refurbished) $290, FS and No Tax
32GB Motorola Moto X (2013) Unlocked GSM No-Contract Smartphone $220 + Free Shipping
Moto X - Certified Preowned from Verzion - $199 no contract Posted 09-07-2014
Verizon GSM Unlocked HTC One M8 (Seller Refurbished) $290, FS and No Tax
Verizon Website: Samsung Galaxy S4 in White Frost/Black Mist (Certified Pre-Owned) 4G LTE: $199.99

Some of the above are older/expired deals. They pop up sporadically.

Reps say a lot of things they are hearing (not necessarily for ulterior motives). That doesn't make them reliable.

I wouldn't question anything you've said here, especially the bolded. But hearing the exact same thing from independent sources added some credibility in my mind. Of course, they could still be wrong.

As for "deals," I'm pretty much locked into the Samsung Galaxy Note series; I use it for work, and the active stylus has become a necessary tool. But you've identified a number of good options for folks who have more flexibility.

Also Max, wish you would have said something before getitng a new phone

Best Buy has a loophole you could stay on unlimited and get a subsidized phone

It's how I got the Note 3
Actually, Best Buy no longer has that loophole. That's the way I retained my unlimited data when I got my Note2 two years ago, but not now.

(Maybe a better way of putting this is, at least three different staff at Best Buy told me it was no longer available.)

Regardless of Whether Max is right or wrong. Make no mistake VZ will kill the unlimited plans. VZ had to issue profit warnings for this year. They want to get rid of unlimited so badly they will gladly deal with any backlash that comes

personally I think the percentage is small enough that they don't care anymore

but I could be wrong on that

It wouldn't shock me if they decide to get rid of it, I just don't think it's in Feb as it would have been news everywhere on tech sites and forums

If you're going to switch to an edge like plan, getting as many people as possible (parents who use low data) onto the plan would be a wise choice. We currently have 6 people on our AT&T 30 GB Family plan. My brother and I used to have unlimited data (but it was throttled after 5gb I think) and we hardly hit that 5gb cap.
