VJ King (PG Louisville Cardinals)

In a recent tournament game in Canton, St. Vincent-St. Mary freshman VJ King put on a dazzling move and sliced through the defense for an easy basket.

“They went to North Carolina and recruited that kid,” a fan of the opposing team was overheard saying.

Not true, said Vince King, VJ’s father.

“Let me set the record straight,” said King, whose son is regarded as one of the top freshmen in the country. “I’ve heard the accusations. In reality, I recruited coach [Dru] Joyce. My wife [Lo] recruited the school. We didn’t even note that VJ played basketball on his application. Dru didn’t know that VJ was going to be at SVSM until after he enrolled. No one did.”

VJ King's story actually began in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland. His father, who grew up in Beachwood and played basketball at Indiana University-Pennsylvania, was playing professional basketball in Europe when VJ was born at the Cleveland Clinic in January 1997. His younger sister, Jalen, was born at the Clinic on Christmas Day in 1999.

The family lived in University Heights and Solon while Vince King served as executive director of The First Tee of Akron, a program that uses golf to encourage young kids to make the right choices. In 2005, King took the job of starting up The First Tee of Charlotte (N.C.) and the family relocated.

Six years later, The First Tee Akron job reopened and King decided to return to Northeast Ohio. The entire family relocated last summer.

“I’m from Northeast Ohio, my wife is from Northeast Ohio and our families are here,” he said. “I’m one of those people who believes that valuable life lessons can be learned living here. I love Northeast Ohio. When we decided to move back, I didn’t want to make that commute from Cleveland to Akron. So, we moved to Akron, close to The First Tee office. We looked around. We investigated other schools.”

Freshman VJ King leads St. Vincent-St. Mary in scoring and blocked shots. The Irish plays Vincent Warren iin a Division II state semifinal in Columbus today. - (John Kuntz, The Plain Dealer)

Practice had been over for about 30 minutes and the gymnasium at St. Vincent-St. Mary was virtually empty, save for two adults locked in a deep discussion in the front row of the bleachers and one player shooting jump shots.

As the player dribbled from spot to spot and launched shot after shot, the sound of ball meeting floor echoed throughout the gymnasium, accompanied by the distinctive sound of a perfect shot snapping through the net. Twine time.

Vince King then emerged from a hallway at the back of the gym and approached his son – also named Vince but nicknamed VJ – as the youngster conducted his expanded practice session. The two spoke briefly before the father walked away and took a seat in the endzone bleachers.

“If I don't pull him out of here, he'd stay here all night doing what he's doing,” Vince King said, leaning against the row behind him as if settling in for a long stay. “He enjoys the solace.”

The solace will not last long. Not if young King keeps doing what he has done this season. The 6-7, 182-pound ninth-grader leads SVSM in scoring at 16.3 points a game. He also is first on the team with 27 blocked shots and second in rebounding by pulling down nearly five a game. More importantly to King and those around him, he has helped the Irish reach today's Division II state semifinals in Columbus' Value City Arena, where they will play Vincent Warren at 5:15 p.m.

Any idea on the level of competition in that tournament? It doesn't appear to be very good. It also doesn't look like he's playing up which is disappointing. I'm not saying anything about him as a player but that he simply doesn't appear to be challenged there from what I can see.

Playing up? It's an AAU tourney.

Thanks for the information. We play up and down the east coast so we only see the Ohio teams at a couple of tournaments a year.
King is very very good! He makes good players the same age as him look like elementary school players. I think if your AAU team plays against him you will realize how good he really is. I really cannot believe it the first time I saw him.
