I was wondering if it's feasible or if there are plans in the works for limited WAP (wireless phone) support for this site. I think it'd be cool if I could access a few of the most popular forums and the chat room via my wireless phone. I have unlimited wireless web on my phone and if it were offered, I know I'd definitely make frequent use of it. I honestly have no idea what would go into making that possible, or how it would be put together. If it is a feasible option, I'd even be willing to try to learn the things necessary to help make it happen, even though my contribution to that end would probably have to be minimal. Anyway, someone who knows more about this please chime in and let me know.

That's a good question, and one I don't have an intelligent answer to at the moment. I'll dig around a little bit on the main vBulletin site. I'd be shocked if there isn't either built-in support, a mod creating it, or an easy means of doing it if neither of the first two are necessary.

I tried to go directly to the URL for both the front page and the forums from my phone the other day, and I got nothing. FWIW, I did the same for BN, and it went there, but it was painfully unreadable. I imagine BN was an example of built-in support as an afterthought. Given what I have seen from this site so far, I imagine if there were some mod from vBulletin that would handle it, it would likely be a substantial upgrade to what is available with BN.

I can't imagine it is that costly to do, just based on my experience using the service. The effort it would require may be another story though. Most of the major sites out there have nice WAP versions of their main site (news outlets, ESPN, Google, etc.). But also, many sites that specialize in 3G wireless internet items support it as well, and most of these sites run mainily on donations.

I have. There are a couple different groups developing mobile support for the forums, and I'm monitoring each of them. No ETA yet, but the ones I'm watching are active, and they look good so far. Each support both cell phones and PDAs.

As a temporary solution, you could read (but not post) the forums at http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/archive/index.php. That area is actually designed to aid indexing by search engines, but its stripped down format is close to what WAP support would produce.

As more info becomes available, I'll post it here. But feel free to ask for an update here as well, if and when it's been a while and you're curious again. Full featured mobile support will definitely come in time, it's just a matter of when.

WAP support?

Whoa, for a minute I thought you meant a support group for Italians...

My Uncle Franco just saw this post and he's highly, highly offended. As soon as he's done with his pizza you can expect some negative rep.

i think this could be done by taking the stripped down index page clarity mentioned and then adding a cascading style sheet (.css) to style it up in the familiar colors and appropriate font size for a phone.

try looking here clarity for some real basic info on css or any other web design.

Thanks V-G, I definitely did some reading there. I fly by the seat of my pants on all the HTML and PHP stuff, so it's always good to learn a few new tricks.

As far as PDA/WAP/etc. support (to update this thread), it is definitely coming. I don't have an ETA, but I think it would be reasonable to figure within the next 2 months or so.

Also coming; expanded full-text search functionality, signature image hosting, game categories in the arcade, user-defined language censorship, private (user to user) bet support in BP Book, expanded ignore functionality, image galleries, friend system expansion, and more.

Some soon, some less soon, all in the pipe, etc.
