Washington Football Team releases quarterback Alex Smith

Quarterback Alex Smith, who won the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in helping the Washington Football Team win the NFC East title, has been released by the franchise, it was announced Friday.

Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement that the team granted Smith's request to be released after the two met this week.

"I had a chance to meet with Alex Smith this week and we had a very honest and real discussion," Rivera said in the statement released by the team. "We had the chance to reflect on the 2020 season and talk about moving forward into next year. After the conclusion of that meeting we decided that it would be best for both parties to move on and we will be granting Alex his request to be released.

"I want to thank Alex for his contributions this past year. He made such an impact on our young roster and his leadership was one of the key factors in our late season success and in making the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Everyone here in Washington wishes Alex and his family the best going forward and appreciates all that he gave to our organization."

The move saves Washington $14.9 million against the cap, and Smith becomes a free agent.

Washington has two quarterbacks under contract -- Taylor Heinicke and Steven Montez. And Kyle Allen is an exclusive rights free agent and expected to return. But the team wants a long-term solution.

Jason Wright says Washington Football Team under consideration as permanent name, cites fan sentiment

"There are a set of folks that have warmed to the Washington Football Team," Wright said of input the organization has received. "Some of the things that are emerging from that are the Washington Football Team has something that ties deeply to our history. It feels like that isn't jettisoning all the things we have been in the past, whereas something that's completely new might feel that way.

"It's important for a substantial part of our fan base to feel that this is a continuation of something versus a complete reset, something brand new."

Washington offensive coordinator Scott Turner excited about reunion with Curtis Samuel

In his first season as offensive coordinator of the Washington Football Team, Scott Turner had an up-and-down year.

A look at the overall numbers is disappointing. Washington finished No. 30 in total offense and No. 32 in Football Outsiders’ Team DVOA offensive rankings.

So, a big emphasis for Washington head coach Ron Rivera and Turner heading into the offseason was to improve the talent at the skill positions — especially at wide receiver.

In March, the Football Team did just that, signing former Carolina wide receiver Curtis Samuel to a three-year contract, reuniting him with Rivera and Turner from their time with the Panthers.

Rivera drafted Samuel in 2017, while Turner was the quarterbacks coach with the Panthers in 2018 and 2019, under his father, Norv, who was offensive coordinator. The younger Turner served as interim offensive coordinator during the final four games of the 2019 season.

In a recent appearance on the “Washington Football Talk” podcast JP Finlay, Turner spoke of reuniting with Samuel.

“Yeah, I’m fired up, man. Curtis is one of my all-time favorite guys,” Turner said.

WFT has a tough schedule but I really like this team. They came on as last season progressed and played Tampa as well as anyone in the playoffs. Haskins going through the motions really hurt them last season. I have to expect QB play to be improved & would be surprised if they don't win 10 games or more.

Oooooh....Fitz listed Terry as a best friend but Terry 100% snubbed him. There's about to be some old fashioned middle school drama up in this bitch.

Im surprised a bit that Washington has a regular season wins total set at 8.5. They are playing 17, so they can lose 8 games and still win the over. With a talented young DL, playing in a weak division, and huge upgrade at QB over the wilderness they wandered the majority of last season, I am buying WFT over 8.5 wins.

Washington Commanders it is.

Just like Cleveland with the Guardians, I don't necessarily think it's a bad name, but if you have all this time to rebrand yourself, why so lazy and uninspired with the damn logo? There are so many ways you can go with a name like Commanders and you just slap an initial on your uniform. Come on, man.

Same reaction I had to it. Interestingly, there was an Arena Football Team based out of Landover, Md in the 80s called the Washington Commandos:
