This is apparently a very elaborate scheme, with falsified hospital records and the whole bit. Very interesting story

WTF? A Dominican born player lied about his age to make himself four years younger -- that's not a Greek tragedy, that's just the MLB status quo for at least the past 15-20 years.

Nothing involving Jim Bowden unravels like a Greek tragedy. It's typically more like Farrelly Brothers low-brow comedy.

Washington Nationals' Jim Bowden resigns amid 'false allegations' - ESPN

Bye, bye Bowden.

VIERA, Fla. -- Jim Bowden resigned Sunday after four seasons as the Washington Nationals' general manager, leaving under the cloud of a federal investigation into the skimming of signing bonuses given to Latin American prospects.

He has maintained his innocence in the matter but said Sunday, "I've become a distraction."

Sports Illustrated, citing an unidentified baseball executive familiar with the investigation, reported on its Web site last week that the FBI is looking at Bowden's actions as far back as 1994, when he was GM of the Cincinnati Reds.

Bowden met last year with FBI investigators looking into an alleged scam involving skimming signing bonuses for prospects from the Dominican Republic.

His announcement comes two days after Jose Rijo, a special assistant to Bowden, was fired by the Nationals.

It was at Rijo's Dominican academy that the Nationals organization was introduced to a player it first knew as Esmailyn "Smiley" Gonzalez. He is the Dominican prospect who received a $1.4 million signing bonus in 2006, when the Nationals thought they were signing a 16-year-old shortstop.

Nationals president Stan Kasten said last week that a Major League Baseball investigation determined Gonzalez was born in November 1985, not Sept. 21, 1989. It also was discovered his real name is Carlos David Alvarez Lugo, Kasten said.

Rijo was credited with spotting Gonzalez in the Dominican about two years before the Nationals signed him.

Has anyone seen what has gone down with him recently? He's currently appealing a 7 game suspension for throwing a ball at a Phillies fan on Aug 21. Last Saturday he took a cheap shot at the Cardinals catcher who had moved out of his way to let him touch home plate. Yesterday he took out the Marlins catcher with another collision at home plate (which I have no problem with). The Marlins pitcher tonight responded by hitting him with a pitch early in the game and then threw behind him later on in the game which was followed by a brawl. My favorite part was when the Marlins first baseman comes out of nowhere and drops him and the rest of the teams gets their shots in.

I guess God is an arrogant prick who walks around with an overblown sense of himself who also just happened to start watching baseball in 2004, but was ALWAYS a Red Sox fan. Weird.

I was hoping he was better than that.

I don't have a problem with Morgan's collision with the Marlins catcher--the guy was standing right on top of home plate. The hit on the Cardinals catcher was unnecessary, though--he was a good step away from home plate and presented no obstacle whatsoever to Morgan scoring.

Wilson Ramos Kidnapped

Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has been kidnapped, the Denver Post's bilingual website, VivaColorado.com, reports, with other media sources corroborating the news.

According to El Nacional, Ramos was approached by four gunmen outside his home and taken away. A source said that the kidnappers have yet to contact the family, but El Universal says the "Body of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations" arm of the government has already set up operations at Ramos' home.

El Universal adds that Ramos was taken away in a green car.

Ramos hails from Venezuela, where there is a significant problem with kidnapping. Generally, these crimes are for money and Ramos was a logical target, given that his success in the majors earned him the right to a league-minimum contract, which was $414,500 in 2011. That's a lot of money to most people, especially in Venezuela.

Wilson Ramos rescued after kidnapping

VALENCIA, Venezuela -- His eyes tearing up with emotion, Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos embraced investigators who planned his rescue and said he had wondered whether he would survive a two-day kidnapping ordeal that ended when commandos swept into his captors' mountain hideout.

Ramos said Saturday that he was happy and thankful to be alive a day after his rescue, and that the final moments had been hair-raising as police and the kidnappers exchanged heavy fire in the remote area where he was being held. He said his kidnappers had carefully planned the abduction and told him they were going to demand a large ransom.

"I didn't know if I was going to get out of it alive," Ramos told reporters at a police station in his hometown of Valencia, flanked by police investigators and National Guard commanders. "It was very hard for me. It was very hard for my family."

Ramos, 24, had not been seen or heard from since he was seized at gunpoint outside his home Wednesday night and whisked away in an SUV. It was the first known kidnapping of a Major League Baseball player in Venezuela, and the abduction set off an outpouring of candlelight vigils and public prayers at stadiums as well as outside Ramos' house.
