Washington Nationals (2019 World Series Champions)

The good news is that Garcia only went two innings. The bad news is that Jordan Zimmerman is getting abused. Whiny Bitches leading 5-1 in the 3rd. :(

Am I the only one that finds it incomprehensibly stupid to shut your best pitcher down solely for innings when you have a legitimate shot at getting to the World Series?

Didn't their manager cite 'mental' reasons for shutting him down?

But to answer your question, [strike]yes[/strike].

edit: I meant to say 'no', you're not the only one. Yes, it is inconprehensibly stupid. :p

Whoops.

No, you're not the only one. Now, if it was the Yankees? I could see them doing it, and would probably agree with it. But when you are the Nationals and the franchise has never been to anything ever, you take your shot. You never know when...or if...you will get another one.

I guess Rizzo cited mental and physical reasons:

?After yesterday?s start, we just figured that mentally and physically, Stephen looked like he was fatigued,? Rizzo said. ?We decided, what?s the difference of 1 59 1/3 innings or 163 or 164 or 165 1/3 innings? We said let?s pull the plug today and move on with the season and try and finish the season off positive.

No.

What gets me is that even if they were dead set on some arbitrary innings number...why not hold him until interleague play? They pretty much acknowledged to their fans that they had no expectation of making the playoffs in February so adjusting plans to have him pitch in October or November would be a waste of time. Just gross incompetence.

159.1 innings. That's where they stopped him. What kind of professional athlete only works, essentially, 2/3 of a season. An "ace" should be able to work at least 225 innings. Hell, 20-25 years ago, guys regularly worked 275+ and had long careers. I could see if he was 19-20 years old, but Strasburg is fucking 24...

He is coming off of Tommy John surgery.

I actually respect that they are looking at this from a long-term perspective for both him and the organization rather than just looking at this season.

If they had started formulating a plan in May when they knew they had something as a team, he could have been at ~175 innings and fresh for 3-4 playoff starts of 5-6 innings, all on regular or extra rest (i.e. not doing the games 1,4,7 thing). Easily.

I absolutely agree.
