You never come back from Copperhead Road
...and change is in the wind.

The media campaign and the NCAA carousel have packed up and headed for warmer spots...but we are left to continue churning in the tide of their wake.

Will Braxton become the face of the program? Can Luke do enough to keep the job he cherishes? If Urban is truly interested does it even matter what we do from here this season? Is Brionte in or out? When will we get Nate back? Will Posey and Boom be the force we expect? Will the staff get aggressive with the game plan now that we are in 'go for broke' mode? Will Gene Smith keep his job? So many questions around a team that might have been the most stable program in the nation less than a year ago.

We can spin and debate, talk about the importance of the TSUN game and speak about a 12 game season..but the next four weeks are clearly a cross road for Braxton, Fickell, and the entire circus we find ourselves in.

4 wins: Fick likely becomes a hero and the bulk of fan base unites behind him as the HC of the future. Brax likely did enough to become a legend (assuming he is the QB for each of those wins) and we are BACK..even though we never really left.

3 wins: Solid...Fick becomes a real long term option in the eyes of many, but likely Buckeye nation would still be wondering about life with Urban. I think 3 wins is enough to keep Luke in play...but now it will truly be a 12 game season. A loss in the next four weeks will require a win over TSUN and probably a bowl win to keep the fans from screaming for Urban or another big name.

2 wins: Probably a reasonable result given the circumstance..but likely viewed as unacceptable by many of the fans and perhaps the administration who are accustomed to 10 win seasons. I think Luke will really feel the 'interim' tag if we split the next four...and the depth chart probably experiences all kinds of turmoil and second guessing. Will be tough to hold the team together as guys return from suspension and people start to second guess much about the team and the staff.

1 win: rut row. The sky is falling crowd starts to scream about the end of the program. The fans divide, turn on each other..and the players might do the same. It gets real ugly real fast. Through the scandal we had our differences, but remained bound together as we collectively hoped for the best. a 1-3 run to open conference play and we split wider than the Grand Canyon. It gets dark and drumbeats for a coaching change become LOUD NOISES.

0 wins: the wheels come off....and the AD/BoT may need to do something drastic and before the end of the season to save recruiting, limit transfers....and keep the boat afloat.

Every game matters..but there is a lot at stake over the course of the next 4 Saturdays, and of course the NCAA is likely to close the book on our NOA..so it looks like we have a lot of closure coming before our bye week arrives.

I am preparing for the worst, hoping for the best (both on the field and from the NCAA) and feeling like we are finally entering the rinse cycle.

The team is young..but there is probably too much talent and expectations to think Luke can survive anything less than 9 wins..and 9 would likely be considered on the bubble. In fact, if Urban has expressed interest then 10 might even be a bubble result. Either way..the pressure is clearly on for the MSU, Nebraska, Illinois, and Wisconsin games..and there isn't a clear W on the list.

All the questions may not be answered..esp. if we go 3-1, but we could see resolution of our course if there is a 0 or a 2 in the win or the loss column for the next four games. Here it comes...brace yourselves for some cold weather. The fourth quarter is coming early for this coaching staff..time to man up or give way.

See you all on the other side where I will be screaming O!H! no matter what happens next.

If we go 3-1 in the next 4 games, you really think majority of Buckeye Nation will be wondering about Urban??? That would mean at least a victory over a current top ten team, plus wins against MSU and AT Champaign. Wow, that's a tall order!!! If Buckeye Nation really isn't singing Fick's praises after a 3-1 run in the next 4, then we truly are spoiled rotten. This is a VERY young team with loads of off-field issues to deal with. A 2-2 record in the next 4 would should be more than acceptable. Are we expecting Fick to step into this mess that HE INHERITED (As far as we know, he didn't create any of it), and lead the Bucks to their 7th Big 10 championship in a row? Sure, we all root for it, but that can't possibly be expected as a realistic possibility. I know, I know, "shock the world", but let's give the guy a break. We let Tress go 7-5 in his first year without any major flack. I think if Fick is sitting at 5-3 after his first 8 games, with a third string running back, true freshman QB, and a load of unknowns at WR (not to mention injury to Nate Williams... damn, nevermind, I guess I did mention it...) he's on solid ground.

The general frustration with this season by many Buckeye fans is very...well, frustrating. Not saying you're claiming to be frustrated, but the fact that many people act like this season is already on a slippery slope is just plain ignorant. We're freaking 3-1 and loaded with athletes.

After re-reading your post, I agree with your statements on the general number of wins. I guess I'm just venting over my thoughts on the average fans' responses to this season so far. Ugh... I need to chill. Need a beer.

Great post and completely agreed. Who would have thought 12 months ago that this 4 game stretch would mean so much. It will be quite a ride either way...
And you know what 0 wins 0r 4 I will still be a Buckeye and screaming my lungs out at the TV every week after that just the same way I have for43+ years ..Of course I've been a Cubs fan since 79 when I moved to Illinois and I will be forever even if they never win a WS.. a fan is a fanatic Band wagon Jumpers are never happy thats why they bail at the first sign of adversity..

I think this year's version of THE GAME is more important than is being acknowledged in these forums. scUM is a bad team with a terrible defense. We are SUPPOSED to beat them. A loss would mean that scUM has regained the momentum, with a new coach for both teams. Remember JT changed the momentum of the series within a year of first assuming the role of the HC. That was not an easy thing to do, especially for a first year coach.

I always look at the doomsday scenario, and it seems Hoke is a good coach so far. Mattison is definitely a good coach. I checked out his history, and he was the co-DC at scUM during the Cooper days, and then Florida's DL/DC during the 2006 beatdown. Jury's still out on Borges.

We definitely can't let them retake the momentum guys. We need to shut them out like we did last year. I think we can do it. Go Bucks! :osu:

Maybe we can turn the tables on the Zookers they will be ranked and the favorite when we meet...My Illini friends always used to say when the Bucks crushed zook "Wait till B ball season" well at least I have the upper hand there now..:)

You're spot on with your assessment. As much as it pains me to say this, but I think we are looking at a .500 season at the end.
Reminds me of 2004. We beat scUM that year. But it was at home. I have little faith we'll win if THE GAME was next week. Let's see if we can beat anybody who is somebody out there yet.

Robinson is dangerous and basically their only Offensive weapon. Stop or contain him and we win. Pretty simple really. But easier said than done.

GO BUCKS!!

:osu:

I'm less worried about Robinson than I am our offense. If we we're only able to score on the Toledos, Colorados, and Akrons we could be in trouble.

Tough weekend for us, esp. for Luke and crew.

Is your opinion of Luke as a long term HC shifting?

I just don't think there is any fair way to assess Fickell. He was put into this spot with basically no time to make staff adjustments (I'm not saying he would have, but there is clearly some dead weight that needs to be looked at on this staff). He was left a team with the most important offense contributers suspended..and no quarterback to work with. It's not fair to expect Braxton Miller to lead this team as a true freshmen, it seems like we've always kind of rolled the dice under Tressel when it comes to signing quarterbacks, to wait until Pryor was supposed to be a senior to go out and find a legitimate successor is kind of rolling the dice and it seems to have been pretty much the norm when it comes to recruiting under Tressel..we haven't been bitten by it before because we've been fortunate when it comes to avoiding injuries at QB and we've had some guys exceed expectations (Troy Smith, Todd Boeckman) to mask some guys that failed to live up to them (Zwick, Henton). This time it bit us in the ass because we lost Pryor sooner then we expected to

I think at the end of the day it will be perception that forces us to make a change at the HC spot. I would expect that if we got Urban that he would probably keep Fickell on board (Meyer retained Charlie Strong when he came to UF, and he's going to need a new staff) so he'll essentially just go back to his old job..but it is unfortunate that he's not going to get an opportunity to really show what he can do when it comes to building a team.
