Unlike federal government, most by-products of NASA initiatives are beneficial to humankind.

Did I say that out loud? :paranoid:

Perhaps we're on to something here in a "stimulus" new Manned Moon Project? Thousands employed for many years. Technology advances. Something most Americans would be proud of.

true and they wouldnt be union jobs. then again the moon mission was only what 1/6th of the stimulus package? with 787b just from that (not including the full 23.7t weve tossed at this thing) we certainly could have skipped right on by the moon on the way to mars...

I don't mind. This place is a zoo. And we all are the monkeys. Except Deety. She's a loon.

I thought the sun and the moon were the same thing????

What if the moon and the sun were the same thing we would be screwed. Cheese melts if it gets too hot, and everyone knows the moon is made out of cheese

To learn to build/colonize somewhere other than on our own planet, and to utilize the moon as a launching pad to other areas of space exploration. If we could fly from the moon to Mars, we could launch bigger craft with bigger payloads using < 5% of the fuel currently required just to get a shuttle or rocket out of the Earth's atmosphere.

That's only if we can refine all the raw materials we need from the moon itself.

FWIW in the near/mid term I tend to agree with Buzz Aldrink...skip the moon & head straight for Mars.
