We Got Robbed Last Night

Wow, how it feels to be victimized and helpless... thinking of stopping my bi-weekly contributions to the United Way.

My wife, my daughter, my sister-in-law, and her longtime boyfriend decided earlier in the week that we wanted to go skating on the State House lawn. The Chiller Ice rinks, if you don't know, established an outdoor rink there. We went to dinner then walked over to the State House, equiped my little girl with a set of skates, laced up mine and the four of us (my wife was watching over on a chair about 15 feet off of the ice, she is 7 months pregnant) took the ice.

About 20 minutes to a half hour into our skating, my wife comes running over and yells to my sister-in-law's boyfriend and I that some homeless guy took her purse. We start running across the lawn in our skates in the direction she pointed, only to find ice skate lawn running was like running in quick sand. We peel off our skates and start running in our socks after a few steps into the grass. Now, the guy I'm running with is an Arena Football League receiver and one of the fastest men I've ever known personally. I played football with some real burners, but this guy is one of the fastest receivers in pro football. I'm a bigger dude (6.4, 265ish), so although I won't get there as quickly I have some strength to throw around. We run out towards Third and State Street, and the guy is just gone. Like he disappeared. He was identifiable, and even had a rolling suitcase to make it a positive ID. I will say, that from the time I called the CPD I was AMAZED at how quickly they arrived on scene. I'm talking about a minute, and there were probably 20 cars in the area. Out in Canal Winchester I could be waiting on a cop for 45 minutes to an hour in the same situation.

We can't find this guy anywhere, who knows where he went. It was almost a perfect crime. He spots a 7-month pregnant lady that has her entire family on the ice in ice skates that take, at least, about 20 seconds to get off. He hit the wrong set of people condiering who my wife was with, but the perfect place/situation. In addition, my wife was carrying a couple of hundred dollars in cash plus several gift cards that were gifts to us. We never have that much in cash/gift cards. We cancelled all of our cards and we're trying to get 5/3rd to cancel all of her checks. We call Verizon, and they suspended the account. I had to drop a couple hundred on a new phone today at retail price. My wife's driver's license was in there, with our address (obviously), her car keys and her work phone. Not to mention her expesive purse and wallet (Coach?). It enrages me to think about what I would have done if I would have tracked this guy down. Another part of me asks, what if he had a knife/gun? Is that worth 5 or 6 hundred dollars? What if he would have stabbed my wife to take her purse? What if, and the most gut-wrenching and maddeingin thing I could imagine, he would have taken our little girl? I feel fortunate that things weren't worse, but when I thnk about being a victim of a crime I feel pissed off like this guy:

Are we unfortunate but lucky? What would any of you have done in this situation? I told her I wished she would have screamed at the top of her lungs and we would have got a better jump on tracking this fuck head down. I probably would have taken the beating too far. I felt so bad for her, too.

Props to the Columbus Police Department in outstanding service (you would have thought the State House was being threatened with some type of explosive) and an officer named R. Shepherd. The most professional officer I've ever encountered, very hospitable and accomodating, and most of all, a complete gentleman to my pregnant wife.

So, if anyone spots a homeles guy (large/tall in stature) with a rolling suitcase being drug behind him, call the cops. :mad2:

That sucks, man. But if only things of monetary value were lost, life goes on.

As far as if you'd caught up to him, that's a tough call. I don't think most cops would care if you hit him a couple of times while subduing him, but you wouldn't have been right to batter him to the edge of his life. But if he had physically harmed your wife, I'd say all bets are off, pound away at will.

I agree. Like I said, he could have taken something that no amount of money could replace. I made a statement similar to, "If I would've caught that fuck, I would have..." then stopped myself realizing I was talking to a cop. The officer said "I hope you would have beaten his face in." I thought that was admirable, considering the circumstances and how shook up my wife was. She had a couple of contractions, but nothing too serious. I was much more pissed about the threat of my family's security over the material things we lost.

Dude, that royally sucks. I had my stuff stolen a few years ago; similar to you - wallet, credit cards, house & car keys, driver's license, cell phone, cash... Nothing like going home wondering if the dirtbag had already beaten you home.....

Best of luck finding him and your stuff, but I suspect the cash is already in a liquor store/drug dealer's pocket and the rest of your stuff is in a dumpster someplace.

Like you said, it would've been so much easier had they just taken the cash.

It's been an hour and a half and no one has called Mr. I a figure skater yet? For shame, people...for shame.

Man, reading that story just sends me into rage. I feel bad for you and your family. Nobody should ever have to go through that, let alone a little girl and your pregnant wife.

The only thing I can tell you is that karma is a mother-fucker...and that dirt bag will get what he has coming in due time.

I hate thieves...... I've had shit stolen from my car several times in my life, and there isn't a more helpless feeling than having your shit stolen by a criminal, especially if you don't get the opportunity to confront them. That being said, your family is healthy and the only things that were taken were materials. You can always replace them........

That guy will get his due a some point.

I'm a hockey player... :) Really.

**coughing**phucyou**cough**

In all seriousness, it's nice to have some "friends" around the office that aren't actually in the office. Meaning, I don't much like most of the people I work with, so having this outlet and support helps make me feel normal again after wondering if I should ever hold the door open for another MFer again, or let someone in during rush hour traffic, or, like I said, continue my United Way donations or volunteer work.

Damn bro that was terrible..... F*ing asshole. I am sure your wife has to be really shook up. As you have said I am glad nobody you love was hurt, though I wish you would have taken your 265 frame and whopped his ass!

Well here is to a brighter 2007 bro!!!

mr i got picked on cuz hes a bender...

in all serioiusness im glad your wife just gave it to him. its not worth any possibilities of complications.

ive seen/been apart of two robberies both in college. one was this time of year in college, we were walking up pearls and some girls were maybe 20 yards ahead of us, i was decked out in my brand new shirt and coat i got for christmas and some guy purse snatched and ran, me and another guy took off like bats out of hell leaving one guy with the girls we were walking with. i was the first to get to the guy as i caught him i grabbed him by the shoulder swung him around and in one punch ruined my new clothes covering them in blood. the two of us held the guy, ramming his face into the gournd as we waited for the cops (pre cell phone days). the other time is i was sitting on a step out on summitt and a guy pulled a knife on me, i stood up and reached for the guy and he bolted, i dont think he realized my size.

i glad cpd was good to you. they always seem to be stand up guys everytime ive interacted with them. [dont get me started on franklin county sheriffs]

Good that you are looking on the bright side of this Mr. I.

Could have been worse, and if it is just money and inconvenience then you will be able to get by it.

Still, I'm surely not the only one that felt your story of yours was missing a punchline -- of some sort.
