Well I just got back from Iowa...

and possibly the last road game I ever go to. We tailgated with a friend of the family who is an Iowa fan from about 9:30 to game time. These people know how to tailgate. I expected a good time but was rather shocked to find out that one of the guys partying in our small group was the Governor of Iowa's son. No shit. He graduated with the guy who is a friend of the family. He was a really down to earth nice guy and you would never know who he was if nobody said anything.
Anyway, generally the less drunk the Iowa fans are the nicer they are (just like everyone I suppose) but the drunker they got the more you found out how much these people hate Ohio State. For those of you who know the stadium I sat in section A on row 71. There was absolutely no Buckeye fans anywhere near us and the more Iowa scored the worse it got for my dad and I. At first it was only a few people running their mouth but towards the end every one felt they had to get their jabs in. Even the people who were very nice when we sat down were yelling "fuck Ohio State" towards about the beginning of the third quarter. Their were a few times I was just about ready to fight even though I realize that would have been stupid. The only time I was really ready to go was on time when Zwick got sacked and some low life about 10 rows back yells "take that Cory Stringer". I stood up and turned around but had no idea who said it. I think I was ready to risk jail time for that one but no one gave up who said it. Absolutely classless.
As far as the game goes. I am as big a Buckeye fan as any Buckeye fan alive but I never thought I would be embarassed to be wearing Scarlet and Grey. Walking out of that stadium, I was embarrassed to be wearing scarlet and grey. I hurts to have had to say that but its the god honest truth and before any one criticizes me, don't unless you were there. You have no idea.

A loss always hurts when your a Buckeye fan, because we have had so much success over the years and a recent NC.

I sat in ScUM stadium and watched an undefeated OSU team go down 20-0. Think I took some harassment during that game?

The thing to remember is that many of these people are jealous of the great success that OSU has had. They remember the poundings that they have taken at the hands of the Buckeyes over the years. This is especially true of the Iowa's and Northwesterns of the Big Ten. They are extracting their pound of flesh while they can.

Iowa is kinda like Purdue in that they have experienced some football success, and get pissed because they are in a league w/ OSU who always crushes their season, along w/ scUM. Indiana and NW fans don't care-they have not seen OSU as a block to their greatness.

Agreed. I bet that there were more than a few Iowa folks that remember us going up 56-0 in the first half in the 1995 game at The Shoe.

Okay, I got back a few hours ago and I had the complete opposite experience. Everyone that we saw was great. We got in town on Friday night and headed out to a bar called the Vine. We got lots of strange looks as We were all dressed up in our OSU garb so We stood out like a sore thumb. People were looking at us but no one really said andything. This guy came over and started talking to us and told us he worked in marketing and he would be DJing a tailgate where lots of groups would be the next day and gave us his number and said to give him a call the next day. So We continued to drink....and drink.....and drink....beers, shots, etc. Had a great time no problems.

Saturday We got up and headed out to the tailgate that We were told about sure enough there the guy was and there were both iowa groups and the offical osu tailgate (got my picture taken with Archie). We then went over to another tailgate with this guy where we were the only osu people and they were giving us beers and over all a great time. We went to the game and not a problem except one guy who jumped in thumps face. Other Iowa people told thump if he would have punched the guy in the face they wouldnt have helped the guy because he was being an ass.

After the game We went back to the vine and again no problems. Hell We didn't buy a beer all night because iowa fans were bringing us beers all night. Overall they had some great fans and most looked at us and were like wow we got lucky and how big the win was for them and they knew 9 times out of 10 they would lose that game.

I can't wait to go back out to iowa sometime becasue we were treated with nothing but respect by every single person We ran into.

I had a similar experience to buckeyefool. Lots of fun before the game, tailgating with half OSU and half Iowa fans. They're the best Big Ten fans I've encountered yet. In the game was okay too, they cheered for their team, though they sat most of the game which annoyed me. I wanted to be able to stand up (as I'm used to doing in the student section). Nonetheless, I got a high-five from an Iowa fan or two after the Buckeye touchdown.. hah.. Very knowledgable fans, humble in victory, and no real heckling at all. I'd definitely go back again, but hopefully when Ohio State has a better team. BTW.. that Korey Stringer remark is absolutely awful. I don't think I've ever heard of a worse remark at football game.

I've been to a few road game losses before. 1993 Michigan, 1999 Kickoff Classic vs. Miami, 2001 Penn State, 2003 Wisconsin, 2003 Michigan, and 2004 Northwestern to be exact. I had to be in Kalamazoo, Michigan for the weekend...and I watched the Iowa game in a BW3s full of scUM fans...I felt like crap, but I wasn't embarassed to be the only one in this bar wearing scarlet and gray. The Iowa fan who said the Stringer comment should be embarassed....not you. We got destroyed Saturday...so what? We looked like crap! I'm still proud to be a Buckeye. Now i'm not critizing you for feeling the way you felt...because that's how you felt. You can't help that. I just want to know why. Was it because the team was so bad? Was it because the fans were so bad? Would you have been embarassed if the fans hadn't been hostle? It's not right to have to leave a game feeling embarassed. That's not what being a Buckeye is about. I'm sorry to hear about the experience you had at Iowa. I hope you do continue to go to road games, most of the time they are a good experience, win or lose. Just remember...there are a lot more embarassing things that can happen to a football program then losing a football game.

Summer's heat or winter's cold
The seasons pass the years will roll
Time and change will surely show
How firm thy friendship...

Glad to hear most of you were treated well which is the norm , there is always as few people who will be stupid at any big ten stadium. Section A is where the university employees and alot of season ticket holders are in Kinnick. Those seats are ussually easy to get an the resale as alot of the employees dont go to the games so it was propably a few drunk walk ups being stupid.

Kinnick has 73 rows in the east and west stands so if that guy did make that tasteless comment from 10 rows back i hope he had a parachute on.

Thanks for the comments. I feel I should clarify on one thing. I tailgated from 9:30 to game time surrounded by Iowa fans. During that time the fans were just like you said. Everyone was great. The night before at the hotel the room across from us was full of Iowa fans and they were great. When we left the stadium everyone was great. The only time we had problems were when we were in the stands. One fan would say something and that would just give the next fan the confidence to say something else. I had a great time in general.

northern keep in mind it only takes a couple of a holes in teh stands to ruin your experince, this is why goin on road games are so important, it teaches/reminds you how to act most of the fans in the big ten are great (some teams have a reputation) but these are the band wagon fans
