What are some kinds of turf that grow well in shade?

Guys,

First off, thanks for the above recommendations. We have 2 trees in the front yard that are going to be cut down by the county b/c of a road-widening project. We tried sowing some seed last summer to no avail.

There is actually moss growing in the front yard now.

Moss, bingo. Compaction for sure, moss is shallow rooted and likes shady conditions. Surface tree roots are probably a contributing factor too. When the soil is very compacted, the roots tend to come up to the surface for moisture and airflow. Remove trees, break up soil to identify and remove remaining roots, get a soil test and amend as indicated, lightly till the surface and go with a good seed blend for your area, probably ryegrass/bluegrass blend. Lightly drag or rake the seed into the top 1/4 inch of soil, water lightly but frequently untill germination.
